Advice:
Boss being a JERK!

My boss has been really nasty to me when I return to the office after being out with a flare up. He yelled at me for not knowing about a decision someone else made then called me incompetent within my first hour back in the office. I am taking this to Human Resources but in the process the advocate said I should also fill out ADA paperwork so I am also covered since the boss guy has been so horrible to me and requiring to continue to respond to calls and emails when I was supposed to be on bed rest.

My issue is that I'm not sure if my Doc will see Crohns as an ADA issue and what things are appropriate accomodations anyway. I do know that lifting heavy things and sitting for long times have cause me abdominal pain but that is about it. Does anyone have any exerpience with this?

" Crohn's IS an ADA issue! My pc even gave me a handicapped placard. I only use it for bathroom emergencies. If your doc won't work with you, find a new doc! Your advocate is right, fill out the paperwork.
Best wishes to you! "

" Yes, like Fraz states, it is a disability and is covered by the ADA and the Family Medical Leave Act which entitles you to 12 weeks of sick leave per year. My doc filled out the FMLA paperwork and said that he had to do it for most patients. "

" Some bosses love to take advantage of people, push them and harrass them... but you have rights. Please fill out the paperwork. He is creating a hostile work environment for you. It is also illegal to discriminate against you for being ill or having a disability, which seems to be what he is doing. Report him to anyone you can. If you have an attorney just go over it with him as well. You can walk out on a hostile work environment and still get your unemployment. "

" My Doctor is wonderful and I have an appointment next week to up my meds and fill out paperwork. I just don't know what accomodations can even be made at my office. Has anyone had the ADA paperwork filled out before? "

" Hi! I found this vey helpful when I asked for a reasonable accomodation at my job because of IBD. http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/telework... The attorney i spoke with directed me to this. I was given the accomodation because my job can be done from my home via email, teleconference meetings, use of a work cell phone, my computer, etc. I usually go to my office to work as it is better for my co worker relationships but when I really need to I work from home - no questions asked. I was only asked for a note from my doctor stating I am being treated for IBD. They did not require any details at all or an explanation from my doctor about why I need the accomodation. I am very fortunate to have a job that can be done from my home. My past jobs could not have been done at home so this wouldn't have been an option for me. I hope that since you work in an office that you may be able to telework. It has helped me so much. Your boss sounds like a problem so you may want to call the EEOC and/or an attorney for suggestions. IBest wishes - Cindy "

" While it may be illegal to discriminate, it can be difficult to prove. So, document EVERYTHING, crossing every T and dotting every I. You need to fill out the paperwork to protect yourself. I had a severe health crisis two years ago, separate from UC, and had constant doctor appointments, tests, et. I had to leave work all the time. So, my doc completed FMLA paper work for me just so it was all legit. My boss is flexible so I never had to use the FMLA, but I'm glad I had it on file incase anything was ever questioned.

I don't know much about ADA paperwork, but call your doc and discuss it. There may even be an office manager or a medical assistant at your doctor's office who can coordinate this with your doctor. They're used to this kind of thing.

I bet your boss is an a-hole regardless of your health. People don't act like this unless they're chumps to begin with. "
