I know this is not much help for you guys, but I just wanted to let the girls know that my ulcerative colitis is non existent since I stopped taking the birth control pill. All my doctors said that it was very unlikely that the pill was causing my problems. They were more worried about me getting pregnant. I've been perfectly well for 8 months. I haven't had a good stretch like this in 5 years.

I can swear by the same thing - after one brand made me pass out at work, they put me on a different brand and my CD flairs were pretty constant. I put the two together but the doc - like yours said "there is no link". I am so glad I read your post, at least I know someone else experienced what I did. Oh – also! My doc didn’t tell me this at first but people with IBD have a higher chance of blood disorders due to the constant inflammation so the birth control hormones technically double the patient’s chances of throwing a blood clot or those other nice side effects. She told me this after I really picked her brain, because I did get a clot and she put two and two together since it was in the middle of a flair.

I had the opposite experience. I was in remission for years while on the pill, but had to stop taking them in 2007 due to blood clots in my lungs and leg. I went into a full blown flare about 9 months after discontinuing the pill. I don't believe going off the pill caused my UC but I do think shaking things up with our systems can have an affect.
They think my clots may have been caused by UC, even though I wasn't technically in a flare when I had them. The birth control pills didn't help either, nor did the fact that I was 42 years old at the time. UC, 20+ years if being on BC pills and being over 35 probably all contributed to my clots. Anyhooooo, the pill now scares the shit out of me, since they contributed to almost killng me, so be careful ladies. And if an added benefit is that you are in remissions once you go off of them, how cool is that??

I'm still not sure if I have UC or CD (most people who hear my symptoms lean more toward CD), but I'd have to agree with the pill making it worse. I went from being able to eat 2-3 meals a day to nothing. The difference was night and day! In hindsight I was symptomatic years ago (and the pill was in the last year), but had I not taken the pill I firmly believe that whatever I have would not have been in this two month constant flare I've been in. It's scary, more so since I have no idea what is going on.
