Hello, I am a very proud Grandma of a 3 year old and a 3 month old. I am concerned about the 3 month old grandson. When my daughter and family came over for Easter I noticed that my grandson had a mis shaped head. I ask my daughter if he was laying down to much and she said you have to be kidding Mom. His head has 2 large mumps on the right side. It looks like when you go to the fair and look in those mirrors that make you look wavy. His head looks wavy on one side. To make a long story short my daughter took him in the next day and the Dr. wants her to go out of town to a plastic surgeon on the 22nd of May. I asked her what he said but she said he didn't say much at all. I am very concerned about this and have done a little research on computer which could be a mistake. Someone mentioned it could be a fusion problem. He was born C section and I thought that was more common in natural birth. Is there any ideas that you could share with me? I would appreciate it so much. Or if anyone has any input I would love to hear what you have to say.
Thank you and hugs, Nancy Posted on 04/29/09, 08:13 pm |

Nancy,
Our daughter had plagiocephaly as a result of the position which she layed in my wife. Of course, we did not find this out until the day of delivery when after several hours the Mid-Wife at the hospital decided to call the doctor on duty to stop by. The baby was transverse and needed to be taken via c-section. For several months after the birth of our daughter we brought concerns about the shape of her head at the pediatrian. We were always told we were over reacting and that she was fine. Finally at 8 months we ordered the doctor to do more and after having an x-ray we received an immergent call that our daughter had craniosyntosis and were rushed to Yale University. As it turned out, her plates were not fused, she ended up wearing a Doc Band for about a 1 1/2 which corrected alot of the assymetry but not all. If the doctors would have listened to us sooner, it could have been more effective. No one wants to here there may be something wrong with their babies appearane. If you truly feel that the assymetry is wrong you may want to further discuss with your daughter. Here is some information from the company which Yale University recommended: http://www.cranialtech.com/ Regards, Tom in Connecticut

I guess we will have to wait till the 21st of this month to see what the plastic surgeon says. Is it common for a doctor to request calling in a plastic surgeon? Thank you again for your help and info. Have a great evening. Nancy P.S. I will let you know when we kind out what this little fellow is dealing with.

Nancy,
Usually a doctor specializing in Cranial-Facial takes the lead role on this. Here in Connecticut, Yale University is the place where all kids are referred when concerns about either Plagiocephaly or Craniosyntosis is a concern. In Illinois, the University of Illinois has such a center: http://www.uic.edu/UI-Service/progr... Regards, Tom

Hi Nancy. Luckily for us, our pediatrician noticed it right away. First let me say, recommend your daughter to get another pediatrician because the more I learn, this is something not easily missed. Second,
My grand daughter is 3 months old now and is going to have the needed surgery in July @ Albany Med. I am nervous but confident. How did u all make out?
