My father had bypass surgery on July 21 of this year. He was scheduled to have Quadruple Bypass surgery and ended up having a triple done. The fourth proved small and tricky to bypass so they didn't do it. Anyway he had some complications after the surgery, he was kept in the surgical ICU a bit longer than expected. His heart is still too rapid and his blood pressure has been low. He's just barely gotten out of being anemic - post surgery he needed platelettes and about 4 pints of blood.
Anyway - since going home from the hospital he has been very emotional, depressed. He is by all means not much of a "cry-er" and tonight I went to see him, and he just started crying once I sat next to him. He expressed that he has no control over it, he said tonight it was just seeing me walk through the door that set him off. He just finds himself being really emotional and really down. He is frustrated that he's not feeling better more quickly... and not sleeping well, not eating well, in pain.. etc... He's only 62 years old and has always been very active, he's feeling restless and unhappy.. ;-( I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with this... he has never been prone to being emotional or depressed and he is truly quite miserable right now. It makes sense to me that he would be as its a pretty major trauma but I worry for him and its very hard to see him so sad. Is depression or perhaps PTSD type symptoms a common occurrence after this type of surgery in anyone else's experience?? Thank you. Posted on 08/10/09, 01:08 am |

Thank you Dinz, I'm wondering is he should contemplate antidepressants or perhaps let it run its course... Thank you for wishing him well and for responding.

Hi Dutch,
Few years ago my father had a liver and gallbladder surgery, and he experienced depression and cry-spells big time. He has been on and off antidepressants; the doctor eased him on and weaned him off so he didn't become dependent, and has had the treatment few times, as it seemed needed... One of my friends has had a similar surgery and experienced similar symptoms. So I think it could be part of the after surgery recovery. Depression can be so easily triggered by the emotional and physical stress the body goes through from diagnosis to the actual fact and the aftermath... I wish him well, and I wish your family the strength to give him the support he needs.

Hey Lisa friend!! Thank you for replying, it makes sense that this would happen, I think its just caught him and me off guard. I've just never seen him like this, He's so reluctant to go on any antidepressants or anything like that. I am a bit relieved to hear that this is not unusual I guess I'm just hoping he will feel better soon. Appreciate your words Lisa xoxoxox

Oh gee I remember having my gall bladder out and then I was having breakfast and crying hysterically. I think my roomie called the nurse and when she came in she asked what was wrong. I sobbed they brought the wrong sugar and I was laughing and crying cause I felt so stupid.
I am sure the heart is more serious and there is fear there. You probably need to tell his Doc just to check. Hope he is better...
