Beta Blockers and coronary artery disease

I wanted to make sure your members of this community are on beta blockers and if not make sure there is a good reason you are not. Atenolol, Toprol (Metoprolol), Carvedilol (Coreg) are commonly used beta blockers.
The data shows that in patients with a history of MI (heart attack) beta blockers reduce recurrent MI and total mortality rates.
A new interesting study in Annals of Internal Medicine July 3, 2007 just took 1515 patients with known heart disease and compared those on beta blockers (among other standard meds) which was 1154 pts to those NOT on beta blockers. They performed intravascular ultrasound to actually compare the vessels of those on beta blockers and those not on them.. and those on them had much less blockage (less atheroma volume)
Interesting

" It is a real challenge getting used to the Bets Blockers (Metaprolol)but it works in an odd way . It prevents me from successfully over doing daily life because I wear out rather quickly . I may be wrong but I think the Beta Blockers slow you down . "

" Thanks for posting the positive study about bata blockers. I've been on Toprol, varying doses, for 3-4 yrs now. Now after my bypass, I'm down to 25mg/day. The only bad side effect for me is the weight gain. Even with lots of exercise and a cardiac diet, I fight it. Any way to counter this effect? Maybe take it with goji juice, or some neat trick? :-) Jessie "

" beta blockers are effective medicine but have terrible side effects, more noticeable if your young. they used to just write off lack of interest, confusion, forgetfulness as old age, but when this stuff happens and your only 37 there has to be another reason. talk to your dr and try to be on the lowest effective dose. " I complained to my Cardio doc that toprol made me feel like I was moving at turtle speed and drowsy. He advised me to take it at bedtime instead of the am and it works better for me. I sleep better and the daytime I'm more alert and nearly as active as I used to be. "
