Advice:
help dealing with fatigue, frustration

I don't know if I feel so tired and fatigued (and as a result, extremely frustrated) because of the medication I currently take, atenolol, for HCM OR if it's the nature of the disease but I am tired of feeling tired!
When I was first diagnosed one year ago, the Dr. told me to lay off the caffeine. I couldn't understand how I would ever be able to do that because without a couple of cups of coffee in the morning, I just don't wake up. And, 75mg. of atenolol per day surely saps my energy. So, here I am, 41 years old, once hyper/active or whatever you'd call it and now I'm just always tired.

" I'm not on meds, but I have a bicuspid aortic valve. Fatigue was one of the symptoms that plagued me for "no apparent reason" (Before my heart defect was diagnosed.

My dr. also suggested cutting down the caffeine, and there was usually also sugar involved. Reason being, your body gets used to waking up with that, then it's just a temp boost and you crash hard.

It took a little while to "detox" from it, but I cut myself down to one cup of coffee in the am and one diet soda in the day, plus, I made sure to get regular sleep and took naps if I needed and the fatigue got loads better.

Be well. "

" I can relate to what you say. I have been taking beta blockers since 1985. I drink 1/2 the caffeine coffee, It don`t seem to bother my PVC`s very much. I do have days I can`t drink it this HCM thing has always been like that for me.

Good Luck ! "

" Beta blockers like atenolol are known for making you tired. They block the usage of adrenaline, hence the name beta adrenergic blockers!
But if you can slow the heart down a bit, it can work more efficiently instead of harder. That's the reason for the no-caffeine rule too. If your heart rate slows down a bit, the chambers have more time to fill, which increases the cardiac output.
Can you reschedule your life? You know how much activity it takes to wear you out. Try to schedule in brief rest periods before you get exhausted. Do what you can to keep the rest of your body functioning at peak levels, eat right, a little exercise, proper sleep etc. All of the good stuff that they are telling us we should do daily, right?
I hope this helps. contact me if there are more questions, Diane "
