Hello, everyone. I am new here. My paternal grandfather passed away from colon cancer at the age of 41 (1957) and my father at the age of 62 (2009). I have been exhibiting symptoms for the past few months, with changes in bowel habits for much longer. I first attributed it to the pain relievers I take for my fibromyalgia pain. In the past 2-3 months, I have had bright red blood in my bowel movements. I have also had significant abdominal pain in my right side for about the past 6 months. MRI and CT scans showed a mass of blood vessels on my liver, which everyone seems to think is nothing. But I still have the pain.
I didn't tell my husband or my doctor about the rectal bleeding til this past week. I know that that is the dumbest thing I could've done....waiting...especially with my family history. But I am so scared!! I watched my father die before my eyes on hospice care. I am waiting for a call back from the gastro office to schedule a consult and colonoscopy. I am only 37. I am looking for support from people that understand the fear. Thank you for your support and understanding. Posted on 02/11/12, 06:41 pm |

Giday PW and welcome to the site. Not knowing can be a terrible thing and getting the test/scans etc is the smartest thing even for peace of mind.
Even if bowel cancer is detected does not automatically mean the end of the road as many here will atest to. Just make sure when you see your doc that you tell them every little symptom no matter how insignificant you believe it to be. I wish you well in your journey and with your permission I will add you to my prayer list. G8

I agree even if and not even saying that it is colon cancer, early detection is the key, and never compare yourself to others each case is different. There have been many advancements in care and it also depends when and even if it is found. Try to think positive thoughts and just do the testing. I agree you need to be 100% honest with your doctor or he or she cannot help you properly no matter how scary this may be. I hope the very best for you, this is a great site and full of some of the most supportive people you may ever find.

Your story touched many feelings. I have been taking pain killers for Rheumatoid Arthritis and noticed with the up in dosage more blood. I passed it off sort of worrying but sort of explaining it away. One never knows. Some people here have had coloscopies early and nothing was found. Colon cancer is scary. It totally freaked me out when the mere mention of Cancer was made (Mar 15). Then when when actually diagnosed it further scared me (Mar 26). Then when it was daignozed at Stage IV I was frozen in time (April1). Since then I have calmed down, down lots of reading and heeded the advice of each diagnosis is unique as is the prognosis. Lets go on this journey together...and give each other mutual support...I am here when you need me.

PLEASE get it checked now!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not wait Get a colonoscopy done and hopefully everything will be fine. There are a number of benign conditions that can cause bleeding.
