Hi again,
My sister in law has colon cancer that has metasized to the liver and lung. She gets a port on Friday and we find out when the treatments begin. She knows she has to have chemo and radiation five days a week for 6 weeks or so then surgery. What can I expect during the treatments and how can I best support her? Any thoughts? Thanks

" Well... she has a huge fight ahead of her. Does she have children?
Keeping their life as normal and on track is a huge relief. House work, IMPOSSIBLE... Runs to Whole Foods... Clean sheets..
I dunno.. the little things are really hard to keep up with.
Things that take a 'sec'... when you are not on chemo... is really nice to come out of the bedroom and find done... a real treat. "

" I only wish I had great words of wisdom instead of experience to offer you. I was a
very fortunate patient and had little to no
side effects from chemo, radiation was a bit
more difficult. You could best serve your sister-in-law by just listening to her if she
want to talk about it, talking is theraputic and seems to make the cancer a real thing not
just like a bad dream. Most importantly whe she has those bad moments just be there for her to lean on. I had wonderful support during those trying times and my best support came from my dog. I shared with him so much more than I could with those who love me. I was able to survive all of this plus two surgeries and as of today I am cancer free. Blessings to you for wanting to be of help. You will just know what to say and do when the moment arrives. Stay strong. "

" Thank you so much for your thoughts. My sister in law is about 54 and has two grown children. Her youngest in college close to home thank goodness! Right now I am stuck in the land of "what if's" and trying to use some of my nervous energy for planning. . . she will be doing her chemo and radiation 5 days a week. I don't know how long each session will be so I am not sure about what I will do during the treatments. Is is best for me to put a bag of "trick" together so there is things for her to use her mind on or it is a time to quiet and you sleep? Thanks again for all of your honest responses. I need them badly. "
