Biology/pre-med majors?

I'm in my second year of college as a declared biology major, haven't put in the form for the pre-med program. Just wanted to see if anyone is also majoring bio/pre-med or already did it and how they managed to balance the heavy load of science courses with all the memorizing and reading the dry text books.
I'm not having the best time balancing chemistry and biology classes at the moment I can't even imagine when I have to take organic chemistry with a 300 level biology course. Posted on 10/26/09, 07:10 pm |

at my university pre-med is only offered as a minor but all courses are transferrable and actually fulfill all requirements for med. school - you could look into just taking the program to lessen the science course load. i think it's more on strategy and alot of time management almost to the point where you can't do anything else. good luck. =)

my university doesn't even consider it a minor it's just a focus program that supposedly looks better when you're applying to med schools.
the pre-med program requirements are basically the same as the minimum requirements of a biology major, but a larger emphasis on your GPA. Just seeing who out there has survived the course load and graduated with a good GPA Also on a side note any med students out there that can tell me if calculus will ever be any kind of focus in med school.

At my univ. pre med is not a major. I am on the pre-med track, but I have no major yet (im a sophmore). I have a 300 biology class with Organic Chem now! Big mistake! Honestly, I am a crammer and a procrastinator, so I can't give any good advice for studious habits! And squeezed, you definitely need to take calculus. It relates to other subjects like physics and it does factor into the science/math GPA that med schools look at. I think I may get off the pre-med track next semester. I am realizing that it may not be for me and that I just want to go for money.

I actually already took calculus, didn't learn much so I'm a little concerned about how much it will be used in other classes especially med school. As far as it being used in physics I'm going to take the non-calculus based physics which counts for my major.
Yeah Coldplayfan I've been advised by the pre-med advisor not to take organic chem with another hard class, but looking at what I need to take I don't think I have much of a choice.

I dont know what to tell you....I dont know how I manage to balance the classes. I do know that my fiance does help alot just by listning to me curse sometimes. I take Advanced Calculus and that ussually helps me relax. I admit it I am a geek when it comes to math..dont know how to explain it but I can do the probs in record time. Sorry if I couldnt be any help.

Hey, I am a pre nursing student. I am currently taking A&P 1 and it is kicking my ass. I work full time and that is almost impossible with this class. I have 3 weeks left and the stress is unbearable.I feel your pain! I go to work, come home and study. Everyday! You have to look at the material very often. It has to become you. You can't just memorize it you have to learn it. Discuss the concepts with a lab partner or a study group. Don't be afraid to look stupid. I make flash cards and carry them in my purse and look at a few at a time. Maybe that will help? If you look at the terms everyday, often then it won't seem so overwhelming. Good luck!
