Has anyone taken the GRE yet? Tell me about your experience with it. I am required to take it in order to apply to one of the grad schools I am considering.

" I took the GRE several years ago. From what I remember, it wasn't that different from the SAT. I got pretty much exactly the same score (within about 50 points). These tests are meant to be aptitude tests. They're hard to study for because its about all the knowledge you've acquired throughout your education. There are study books you can use. I got one and read some of it. They teach you test taking skills and go over information that would be helpful for you to know. Like what kind of math, etc.
What I remember about the experience that was different from the SAT (which maybe was a time thing) is that the SAT was in some random school class room and was all paper and pencil. The GRE was in some fancy computer lab room where I couldn't take anything in with me and had to empty my pockets and lock my stuff up. Then I took the test on the computer and was immediately given my score for math and verbal. I think I had a writing test but dont remember.
I can tell you about applying to grad schools that GRE is not one of the top things they look at. Your GPA is more representative of your ability to succeed in their program. But more importantly, your letters of recommendation are really what get you into graduate school. When you ask professors for them. Don't just ask if they will write one. Ask if they will write you a glowing letter of recommendation. Be prepared to provide them with basic information about you, things like GPA, professional areas of interests, etc. Let me know how your application process goes! What are you applying to? I'm in my third year of a doctoral clinical psychology program. "

" I am applying to a Master's program for Speech-Language Pathology. My current university doesn't require the GRE, but the other school that I'm applying to does. I'm doing a practicum in a speech and hearing clinic right now, and I LOVE working with my clients. It is so amazing to see the improvements that they make in a semester. I'm SO excited to be a Speech Pathologist!!! =) "

" I took it during last Christmas break and performed horribly- but I was exhausted at the time and it was 8:00am. I took a class on it (I admit I didn't try very hard), and took the exam again at the beginning of this semester and performed just as badly. At this point, I'm convinced that I'm retarded and will feel extremely lucky if I am accepted into ANY grad school "

" I took it once this summer, bombed it and then retook it in October and did pretty well (560 Language, 740 Math, 3.5 Writing). I recommend either taking a prep course or buying books to help you study. The study time, I have heard it about two months or more-- I did it from May until test time. Ooh and there are boxes of vocabulary cards out there that I found to be REALLY helpful :)

I had three books and a box. I had one book from ETS over the entire thing (hints and tips), one book for studying the language part and one for essential math practice. "
