Discussion:
Are Online degrees worth anything?

Okay so I have been going to a nationally accredited online school for 2 years now and have completed my associates degree. At first I really felt good about myself and felt like I had accomplished something and was excited about reenrolling to finish up my bachelors degree...then I started to do some research on online schools and was horrified about what I found. There is much debate about nationally vs. regionally accredited universities. I personally would agree that an ivy league school looks much better on a resume then an online school, but that is not the card I was dealt with. I work full time and was in the military prior to my current job and I found it pretty much near impossible to attend a traditional college while I was enlisted. I promised myself I would go back to school when I got out and that is what I am doing but it was too difficult for me to balance a full time job and go to a traditional school so I opted for distance learning. I have heard some argue that all online colleges are basically for-profit diploma mills and I have heard others argue that as long as it is accredited by the department of education that it doesnt matter. I am conflicted with whether I should reenroll with my current school or try to find a regionally accredited university online but then I run into the issue with transferring credits. This whole situation has depressed me because I am worried that all this hard work I have put into will not mean anything in the end because I will be frowned upon for where I went to school.

" There are some schools that are not nationally accredited and fit that "diploma mill" you're talking about. But there are also a few good schools out there, such as U of Phoenix or ITT Tech and others that are nationally recognized and great ways to seek your degree alternatively.
Be proud of what you're done, and display it on your resume with that pride and confidence. If you don't feel like what you've done is worth-while neither will the person reading your resume.
It's taken a lot of time and effort to get where you are and that shows a lot of positive traits about you. Sell the skills you learned in your coursework. It doesn't matter where you went- ever- as long as what you take from it helps with your ability to do the job you want. "

" I am taking classes with American Intercontinental University, and highly regret it. They misinformed me about so much, I feel just to get the money from me. It is not a good education and I have heard that employers look down on them.

They did not give an assesment test, I told them I knew nothing about algebra, and I have to take College Algebra, never have had beginning. They don't care, they will fail you, and you take it again wasting so much money.

The small groups, or group projects are impossible, everyone lives in different states, different time zones, so hard to work together like that.

I told them I didn't want to take Medical Billing and Coding after checking more into it, the counselor, will not help me, will not tell me other alternatives. They didn't send any brochures of what they offer.

Initially the con man that signed me up, he talked me into this degree, I told him I knew nothing about algebra, hadn't been to school since 1972, and knew nothing about computers, he said none of that was a problem, well guess again. NOw I am into it for thousands, can't quit, I am unemployed, and would have to start paying back the loan. In my opinion, AIU is a scam, and should be stopped. "
