Advice:
No funding... and feeling aimless

I'm in college, this is my third year, but I KNOW I don't have junior standing.

My parents have picked my major for me for the majority of my life (which I failed miserably at), and now I have just recently been allowed to choose my own path... But I don't know what to choose. I feel stupid, like I fail everything and that I have no focus.

The worst part is my financial situation.

I have no way to pay for this semester, and only limited amounts of money to pay for next year. My parents will NOT cosign any loans for me. Not because I have messed up or defaulted in the past, but because my siblings have. I filled out a Fafsa, but to get the majority of the money I need a parental cosigner.

So now... I feel like the future is bleak, and the present holds nothing either. I'll pretty much be damned if I stop attending, causing a default on my currently dry loan... and I definitely don't wanna end up working at Kroger for the rest of my life. What do I do?

" You dont need parent signatures for Stafford Loans, Pell Grants, other grants or scholarships. The only thing they sign for it alternative funding. On the other hand, you need their signatures for the initial FAFSA...is that what you're talking about? I have paid for all of my college via FAFSA (although I will owe a LOT of money which is my primary college stress reason). My parents said they couldn't financially help me (bull lol, I think they just didn't want to... using the excuse that my brothers will need to go to college to... but they joined the military, so what? lol) Stafford Loans alone pay for most of my tuition...maybe if you don't get enough you can take fewer courses at a time. It sucks to slow down but at least you're still moving forward.

Don't worry that you don't know what your major should be. I've switched like a zillion times. Try things you think you like. My idea that I give people is to take like one semester and take a bunch of electives you think you'll like. Like, I dunno, Art 101, Writing 101, Psychology 101, etc... If after that point you don't know still, try taking the next level of courses in the majors you think you might like. By intermediate level it should be pretty obvious what you're good at and where your interests lie.

Taking a slower pace can be annoying sometimes... I'm in my sixth year with a couple more to go for my undergrad. Then grad school after that. We all have various reasons things take a slightly different than "normal" route. Good luck :D "

" I'm not old enough for a pell grant, I'm only 20 =[. And the Stafford Loan requirements say that I need a cosigner, like a parent with good credit. I can't get anyone else in my family to do it, they don't have the credit.

They signed the initial fafsa, but some of the loans that I can get from it require a cosign from them in order to accept the award. But they won't. "

" Not to sound mean, but I don't know where you're getting this information. It is inaccurate. No parental signatures are needed for funding of Stafford Loans, there is no credit check for them. (http://www.salliemae.com/get_student_loan/find_student_loan/undergrad_student_loan/federal_student_loans/stafford_loans/) all you need to get funding from your FAFSA award is financial need. Nothing requires cosigning unless you seek alternative funding. Nada. Aside from Stafford, what other awards do you need signatures for? I'll find the correct information from you from credible sources.

As I've said, I've been at this a long time. I've gotten everyone in my family through the FAFSA process and I've worked very closely with several financial aid offices at universities and colleges. I'm more than willing to figure this out with you :) "

" when I was 19 I got a student loan on my own. I have never had any help from my parents when its comes to funding my education. I do qualify for grants now because I have kids and don't make too much. I know you may not qualify for grants because you do have to use their income till your 25 or if you have kids you wouldn't have too. I use to hate that when I applied for stuff because I lived on my own but had to claim my dads income and he made too much for me to qualify yet never helped me pay for school!

Many people struggle with a major and I am one of them which is why at 30 I am still in school! LOL I actually didn't go till I decided because I couldn't afford to waste money but if I had to do it different I wished I would have started my generals first. Just research and look into every possible thing you want to do. Learn as much as you can to se what you may want to major in.

GOOD LUCK! "
