Swine Flu?

This is day number 10 that I have been sick with a flu-like illness. Day 5 - I went to my doctor. Was given an antibiotic and albuterol inhaler. Day 9 - wound up in the ER because symptoms were getting worse not better. Felt like I did 7 years ago when I ended up in the hospital for 3 days with asthmatic bronchitis. Now I'm on prednisone, a steroid inhaler, and tesslon pills for the cough.

All during this time, my symptoms have ranged from headache, fever of 101 or above (at night usually), very bad sore throat (which has now subsided) body aches, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and a horrible cough that makes it feel like I've broken my ribs.

I had a flu shot this past fall, but now there's all this talk of the Swine Flu surfacing in the US. Of the 5 states that have documented reports of this flu, I live in one of them...Ohio.

I do know someone who is very close to me who was in Cancun, Mexico, in February. After returning home they had a bad cold, but nothing that resembled the flu. I know this is where the "epicenter" is this strain of the flu is coming from. Makes me wonder!!! Should I have my doctor test me for the Swine Flu? Not that there's anything more that can be done for my illness, but medical people should probably want to know so that they can report it.

Does anyone know how long influenza lasts? Like I said, this is day #10 for me.

" Debi, If this is day 10, you would need to have been in contact with someone infected about 12 days or so ago. February contact would be out of the appropriate time frame. You are certainly experiencing symptoms consistent with influenza but typical recovery should have been by now. I encourage you to rediscuss with your physician.

Dr. Jeremy "

" you should get bloodwork done.
i refuse to go to work with my mom who works at a college.
i have a weak immunesystem so i know i can catch it easily.
also try to cary around sanitizer.

but yea get to a dr and have bloodwork. if youre on day ten and not feeling better than you need something, primary dr would probably be best. "

" Thank you for your response DrJeremy. I had this sort of flu about 7 years ago and was hospitalized for 3 days. I was told I had Asthmatic Bronchitis then, the same diagnosis as this time. It only seems to be this way when I've had a really bad bout with a virus. I have an appointment with my family doctor this coming Thursday. Usually at night is when my fever has been raising to 101 degrees. Last night I did not have one at all, nor do I tonight. When I was sick like this years ago, it seemed like it was a couple of weeks or better before I felt strong enough to consider myself all healed and well. "

" Debi, how are you now? Sounds exactly like what I have, but I have not gone to my doctor yet. I actually started to get vertigo when I would wake up and not feel great all day. Then a week went by or more and the other night I started to get achy, and my fever was around 100. A dry cough started and boy oh boy, an awful sore throat, which now has kept me up two nights. I can't even nap during the day, cause of the cough! I am just taking over the counter meds and hope I can sleep tonite. Other than those symptoms, my stomach has been fine. I know someone who has a parent that just got over Swine Flu and he was also throwing up w/runs. I do not have that. I think it may take another week to really feel better. My fever did break after 2 days too, but cough/throat pain has not. Hope you are feeling better. "

" Thanks Dee...doing much better as it was Spring that I was so sick. Actually was down flat for three weeks!!! My doc ended up putting me on an extra round of prednisone for three weeks as I couldn't get rid of the wheezing. I still think it was the Swine Flu, but I'll never know now. Whatever it was, it hit me like a ton of bricks! Might be a very good idea if you went to your doctor...the sooner the better! I hope you feel better soon!!! "
