I have a 5 year old boy with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. He will be going to kindrgarten next week. Over the last year or so other kids have been asking about his face. We usually simply say he had surgery, that seems to satisfy them. But I am wondering with him starting school if I should go in and let the class know that he has had surgery. I dont want to single him out, but at the same time I wnat to be proactive. I am nurse and had planned to go in with stehoscopes and other things for them to touch and lead into conversation with being healthy and sometimes you have to go to the hospital to stay healthy.... He will be attending a fairly smal school with only 2 classes for each grade. I would greatly appreciate any comments from you parents or kids who have been there!

He is excited to start school. Do you think I should talk to the class, would this keep the kids from asking him so many questions? I just dont know how he will react to everyone asking.

IT IS SUCH AN EXCITEING TIME FOR YOUR SON AND I HOPE THAT IT IS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR HIM..I THINK YOU HAVE A GOOD IDEA ABOUT GOING IN TO SCHOOL AND MAKEING IT A LITTLE MEDICAL CONVERSATION...DOES YOUR SON WANT YOU TO GO??UNFORTUNATELY THERE WILL ALWAYS BE PEOPLE ASKING QUESTIONS AND YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET PAST THAT.YOU JUST HAVE TO FOCUS ON LETTING YOUR SON KNOW HOW SPECIAL AND HANSOME HE REALLY IS..THE STRONGER HIS SELF ESTEME IS GROWING UP THE EASIER IT WILL BE TO HELP HIM DEAL WITH UP COMEING STARES AND QUESTIONS..GOOD LUCK,I THINK ITS GREAT THAT YOU WANT TO HELP EDUCATE OTHERS...LET US KNOW HOW EVERYTHING GOES.

as far as i am aware my mum didn't do that but obviously did speak with teachers so if anything was said they could help, i think maybe if you do go in it might make a bid deal of it, i think educating him, and if you give him an 'explaination ' that he understands and could explain to his class mates it would be better and would help him with his confidence in speaking to 1) new people, and 2)about his cleft lip and palate. I've heard of people that their parents done all that sort of stuff for them, as much as they thought they were helping, it didn't help the child deal with it in the long run, remember you will not be with them every day, which they will get questioned on this.( i know hes only young but the earlier they can deal with q's the better. in my opinion as this is what was done with me)
