Has anyone here been denied SSDI because of cirrhosis brought about by alcohol or drugs??

From doing some research it seems that if you totally kill your liver so that completely stopping drinking will not improve your condition you are eligible.

If however you only partially kill your liver and your condition improves as a result of stopping drinking you are not eligible for SSDI.

Any comments?

" Hi Craig The madness of the social security rules and regulations.
same over here, they send you to a clinic or therapy to; stop the drink and then if successful stop any benefit associated.

Also you can usually get all your pension back in a lump sum,if you can prove you only have6 months to live.
Now the doctor from the pension co may say well i'd say more like a year, or that you may go on a transplant list.

Of course if you have the money to employ a private doctor to say this then all may be well,
being a Brit I have of course had it drummed into me the "Rules is
Rules.
It does"t take long to find out they are all very selectively applied
Regards "

" TYPICAL! Who makes these rules for this stuff!??? What a joke.
Sounds like an accident insurance policy I once purchased for my youngest son through the school. the school suggests to get it if kids are participating in workshop etc.
Basically he has to cut off one or more fingers directly at the base of the finger to receive a small amount of money...lol If he was to cut a finger off at the tip-- He's not covered...LOL So I said to him, laughing.. just keep all your limbs and we wont ever use the policy!
Crazy world we live in! "

" Craig,

Getting disability benefits sometimes requires the help of some legal counsel. I believe that over the years it has become more difficult because of so many people not wanting to work that may or may not have a legal claim. For this reason the Social Security Administration has become a lot more strict regarding whom is eligible.

An example of this is that at one time if you had cancer, you could easily get disability benefits. However, these days, because of some of the success in cancer treaments, I personally know someone who was required to submit a letter from her oncologist stating that her condition was terminal. These people are unbelievable!

Anyway, I do happen to know that one sure way to get disability is if you can get a psychiatrist to give you a diagnosis of either being depressed or crazy. Now I don't believe that you are the latter, but I do recall reading in one of your posts that you take Prozac. Well, despite the fact that maybe half of our country is probably taking Prozac, perhaps this would be a good opportunity to use this to your advantage.

Anyway, I am also aware that it is pretty much a given that the Social Security Administration almost denies all applicants the very first time they apply.

Jeff

P.S. Regarding you message, I am not on FaceBook, but maybe one of these days I will get around to it. "

" Hubby has alcoholic cirrhosis, continues to drink, has been at death's door, cannot get out of bed some days, but his doctor said he will not sign disability papers for him because he is still drinking. Hubby lost his job when he was in ICU for 8 days,(because of the cirrhosis)this happened 2 years ago and he hasn't been able to work since, yet he not allowed to apply for disability. This is just my opinion, but if his addiction is so powerful that he continues to drink, even when doing it is killing him,I would think that the addiction is another disability on top of cirrhosis. We were told once that alcoholisum was a disease, now apparently it is not, even though it's grip is so strong that he still is drinking himself to death, literally. "
