A friend has sent me to this site and support group.
My doctor has taken blood tests and my liver tests are not good. My GGT is 156 and my SGPT is 109 and I have been diagnosed with alcoholic fatty liver a year ago, but still decided to drink. My health lately has gone more down hill and have come here for support. I am not into AA, but know I need to completely quit, but my wife is not supportive. Anyone here have some advice for me or in a similar situation in regard to test results and scenario? Thanks in advance! Posted on 11/05/09, 07:11 pm |

You need to stop drinking! You run the risk of developing full blown cirrhosis which is not a road you want to tread.
When you say your wife is not supportive - what do you mean? Does she not support your attempts to stop drinking?? AA helps some people, not others. Their success rate at recidivism is not what they claim but that's a different discussion. There may be worse ways to die, but off hand Cirrhosis must rank right up there with the best of them, so ask yourself if it is really worth continuing to drink if you already know you have problems because of it. Your enzyme results will improve after a few weeks of not drinking but if the tests you mention were taken a year ago and you have continued to drink then I would suggest you need to get to see a doctor for more tests as soon as possible! You don't mention how your health has gone downhill nor if you are taking any medications. There is a Alcoholics Group on this site which is very active, you may get additional help there but until you have some recent test results no one can speculate what your condition or prognosis is. Sorry if this sounds negative it is not meant to be. Get those tests re-done asap! Craig

You came to the right place. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here who have a lot of great advice. There are also many compassionate people here who will provide you both the emotional and spiritual support that you will need to get through this.
Whether you have Alcoholic Liver Disease that has not yet progressed to cirrhosis or are in the beginning stages of cirrhosis you will find the help and guidance that you need here. If you happen to have cirrhosis, please keep in mind that cirrhosis is not a death sentence. The truth of the matter is that people who have cirrhosis are no different than any other. What we all have in common as human beings is that we are mortal beings. The number one killer in the United States for both women and men is heart disease. The majority of these people will unexpectedly die from a heart attack or stroke. More people also unexpectedly die in automobile accidents every year than cirrhosis (nearly twice as many). Many more people die from the long list of cancers that exist every year than cirrhosis. Many more people also die from complications of Type 2 Diabetes every year than cirrhosis. The list goes on and on! So if you find yourself getting depressed by the prospect that you could have cirrhosis and may one day die from this disease, you need to remind yourself that you are no different than any other mortal being that walks the face of this Earth. Sooner or later, we are all going to leave this place as we know it. There are 133 million Americans suffer from one or more chronic illnesses. Cirrhosis happens to be just one of the many chronic illnesses that both Americans and people throughout the world suffer. If you have cirrhosis, you are no worse off than the individual who will leave for work tomorrow morning and will unexpectedly die in an automobile accident like my father did at the age of 29. In fact, I would like to argue that you are better off than those who will unexpectedly die because you are forced to contemplate your mortality and are able to make decisions and take actions based on this awareness. As for the suffering component of those with Advance Liver Disease, many of those with cancers and other chronic diseases also have their own crosses to bear. Something good can come out of this if you just allow it. It’s a time to grow spiritually. Whether you have Alcoholic Liver Disease that has not yet progressed to cirrhosis or are in the early stages of cirrhosis, you are truly no different than any other mortal human being on this planet. Everything is going to be okay. Jeff

If I may add to that last wonderful letter...you will live longer if you stop drinking..you will avoid suffering and pain longer if not permanetly if you stop drinking..your liver may be able to repair itself if you stop drinking..your loved ones will not suffer heartache that this disease causes you if you stop drinking. To avoid disaster, pain, suffering, heartache that alcoholic cirrhosis brings..number one is to stop drinking, number two is to follow doctors orders. As far as your wife not being supportive, that will make it more challenging, but not impossible. If you want to know what cirrhosis is like, read on this site. If you want to know what cirrhosis will or can do to your body, research on the web. It is fairly simple, alcoholic fatty liver will lead to cirrhosis if you continue to drink..and trust me,you don't want to buy a ticket for that ride.(cirrhosis) please, try any way you can to find some sort of support to stop drinking. The liver can regenerate itself,if it is taken care of,but it will harden and be nonfunctional if it becomes cirrhosis at the end stage. Please, read, read, read as may things on this site as you can,it may be a window to what could lay ahead of you if you choose not to take care of yourself. As the ol' saying goes.."I says it as I sees it." Good luck and welcome to the site, learn my friend,..learn as much as you can . knowledge is power. At least you know about your alcoholic fatty liver diagonosis early,my hubby found his liver problem at the end stage, you have time to turn things around for yourself and your body. Keep in touch.
