Hi, my name is Josh, I'm new to these forums and 23 years of age. Like my topic said, I have a question about alcohol abuse at a young age such as mine. My best friend chris and I have been discussing such things lately. Unfortunatly the reason being is he has been drinking since he was 20 for 3 years and ecessivly in the 3rd year pretty much daily. He has been coming to me talking about a dull pain in his upper right abdomen, and some mild muscle/joint pain and fatigue. He raely drinks anymore, just on the weekends because he's scared. So we researched .
The thing is, I've been looking at symptoms of alcohol related diseases such as this, yet its so rare for someone this young with only 3 years or drinking. Janduice is usually the big symptom and that hasn't come along... Question is, just fatty liver? Detox and abstain for 4 week and ok? Or has anyone heard of alcoholic cirrhosis in 3 years and and should look into profestional medical tests and advise? Thanks in advance. Posted on 11/04/09, 03:11 am |

Hi there and welcome to the site! This place is like an information station! So I thought I would write you a few lines... sorry to hear that your friend isnt feeling so great and the lack of insurance is a total bummer! You are both young and probably need to know that there are thousands of things that can lead to liver problems. It isn't always a blood test and answer kindof thing. It took us over 2 years to figure out what was up with my son, (who is now 18 and never consumed an ounce of alcohol) He has cirrhosis from an unknown cause. He has never showed any visible jaundice symptoms throughout his testing.
Now don't let me freak you out, but everybody is different, so just be aware that getting answers might be easy or might take awhile. It can be nerve wracking! It may be possible that there is something other than a liver issue, maybe a virus of some sort even. Maybe it could be mono? There is alot of maybe's.. So as others have said- find a doctor that will listen to your concerns. Because of your age, many docs will assume you are too young for many ailments. (this happened to us) Write down your concerns/questions on paper before the appointment. Ask if you can have copies of the bloodwork/test results, and keep a binder of your knowledge. It may be that there is a simple answer to your pal's problem. It definitely will help if he stops drinking all together. If you are having health issues, adding any toxins in your system, will only make things more challenging. He should probably try to see if there is any family history of illness that might be genetically inherited as well, just to cover all the bases. The more info you have at your doc appt the better. There's nothing worse than leaving the appt and then saying "O- I forgot to ask that!" I even make notes of what the doc has said to us so later if I have more questions I can write them down too. The doc may have him lay down and tap on his side to see if he can feel where the liver is sitting .. they can sometimes guestimate the size by this simple tapping procedure. Good luck and keep us posted Mare
