Does anyone follow a specific liver friendly diet?
My hubby is trying desperately to give up quick/fast foods for breakfast. But he needs to replace it with something substancial. He isn't ready yet for a vegetarian lifestyle. He's working on it, but I have to go slow with him. So what do you eat? Breakfasts seem to be his downfall. Any suggestions? Especially you "meat and potatoe" types of guys....how did you make this transformation? Posted on 11/02/09, 08:11 pm |

low fat cheese (beware specially of trans and saturated fat content), egg whites omelet , whole grain - non or very low fat - bread.
Oatmeal made with non-fat milk, I try not to use sugar on it. Since I really do hate sweeteners, and haven't been ordered other wise, I also partake of reduced sugar strawberry preserves. Craig, however, will tell you to kill him an ox and serve it whilst the blood is still flowing, on a buttered burguer bun of course..... Anyways don't forget to check with your doctor to see what his limitations and needs are.

Everyone's body and condition of their cirrhosis is different. What may be fine for one,may not neccessarily be fine for someone else. Your hubby's doctor should be the one you get your diet information from. Some people can't tolerate beef because of ammonia build up. some need all the beef they can get.Hubby is in throes of happiness since he has needed protien and it has not bothered him,and he gets the priviledge of steak when he was so terribly weak from muscle loss, but see,it wasn't (beef) causing "him" an ammonia problem. The increased protien actually helped rebuild his muscle mass. But perhaps the same protien would put someone else in a dangerous state.

Uuuummm! wq is right! as a friend of mine used to say regarding meat, 'just cut off its horns and wipe its backside'
Having liver issues does not mean becoming a rabbit. Protein is necessary and available from many sources including eggs, fish, chicken etc and of course beef. Probably the limiting factor is not so much the protein as the amount of salt. Some meats have a very high salt percentage especially pre-packaged factory produced stuff. Boars Head do some wonderful meats and also do special low sodium cuts. For brekky, I do frosted flakes. Fruit is excellent , coffee although a no no in diet sheets is good for you as are most things actually. Other than high sodium food, I don't think I avoided anything really EXCEPT fried food. A little and often is better than large and seldom. In many cases, appetite s a problem so any food is a bonus. Keep Boost + or Ensure in the fridge. Expensive but wonderful. I wont bang on about vitamins and minerals cos I feel like a cracked record, enough to say they are important. If you want to know which ones go read my journals. Finally I'd say, if you enjoy it, eat it. Nothing in moderation is going kill you. Life with cirrhosis can be miserable enough without being deprived of the food you like. Finally (again!) I'd say that the more good nutrition you get get inside you, the better the chances of a degree of liver condition improvement. Craig
