My husband Jim's doctor prescribed Famotidine(Pepcid) for heartburn, does anyone else take this? Now he's unable to keep food down.

Hi ,I used this type of medication for about a month without any problems or side effects,
It only used for a short period to help reduce gastric acid and allow any damage in the gut to heal I believe some people may take it for a longer time for persistent acid reflux I think you should ask you Dr to review you meds fairly often, as I have ended taking stuff much longer than neccessary

Yes, I was prescribed Pepcid long ago before it became an
over the counter medication here in the States. I had ulcers and gastric reflux disease (still have). I experienced no bad side effects from it at all. Now I'm on Prevacid for the acid reflux, which has to be prescribed by a doctor. Pepcid is milder. In fact, I just got through using Pepcid on my dog, who had food poisoning. No ill effects on her either. (under a vets direction).

I checked out the known side effects with this stuff and vomiting was not mentioned at all. Hmmm, maybe something else causing the problem??

Well, most Websites say nausea, vomiting and intestinal pain are common symptoms as well as lack of appetite He's got them all right now. I also read apple cider vinegar helps - has anyone tried that?

The thing about heartburn and acid reflux is that most times we think taking an antacid will help. But I have had some lengthy conversations about this and maybe we are thinking backwards. Let me explain.. When you have excess acid, the body tries to balance by producing antacid. So if you add any form of antacid.. the body will adjust by making more acid... sounds like a vicious circle! So technically.. if you increase your acid intake, you will stimulate your body's own response to release antacid.
Not sure how others feel about this but my sister-in-law takes digestive enzymes to encourage her metabolism and it seems to help her release the extra gases and reduces her heartburn. Of course she doesnt have any liver issues so I am not sure if this would be okay for everybody but might be worth looking into? Good luck! Mare :o)

If you've had your gallbladder removed, your stomach is pretty much
the dumping ground for all of your bile. Hence, the prescription. I don't like burning holes in my gut from acid production and bile. Having had ulcers previously, they're no fun stuff. *hugs* Jos ps-I do remember something about apple cider vinegar & the liver vaguely. But I couldn't tell you exactly what.

Here's a link about alternative meds, apple cider vinegar & acid reflux, etc. Other things that it's commonly used for too.

Vomiting and nausea are infrequent side effects, which you could probably say about any drug. The common side effects don't include those symptoms, anyway I'll provide a link which you may have checked out anyway.
