Has anyone ever experienced using a dieuretic other than Lasix? I'm just wondering if perhaps Jim's system doesn't work well with Lasix and another one should be tried. Any ideas?

" is he only on one ? chuck has been on 2 aldactone with the lasix 180mg between the both. His GI tried switching the aldacdone to something else cause he was having breast pain. that one didn't work at all. He is dealing with the pain which he says he has gotten used to now. "

" Too funny!!!! sorry
That isn't breast pain, those are tits!!!!! :-))
Don't worry, I have them too. First time I've been able to feel boobs without getting my hand slapped away!!! LMAO

gynecomastia is a common side effect of taking aldactone. Hell, if he starts lactating (a possibility) you may get free morning milk!!!

I am assured that ceasing aldactone can have a deflationary effect on the newly acquired mammaries. You need to teach him how to examine himself in case of breast cancer. Also consider investing in a sports bra!!!!!

Too funny! sorry again but that was the highlight of my day :-)

" The Doc's normally prescribe both to balance them out, lasix is potassium lacking & aldactone is potassium sparing. One gives one takes away out of balance either way can have some serious sides, lack of potassium crapping & to much will screw with your heart feel like having a stroke. Have experienced both & have reduced my salt intake down to about 800 mg and drink lemon juice in hot water a natural diuretic and easy on the system. Found that by diet the body works better. take care Peace "

" Thanks for the suggestions. I have done the warm water with lemon myself and I love cold water with lemon as well, and lots of it. Perhaps that is how I became such a sourpuss! Kidney doc put him back on 20 mg Lasix 1x daily, beginning this morning. Said his potassium was perfect. Asked GI today if he should start the aldactone again and he said no, not yet. Ok, Russian Roulette time??? Anyway, we are keeping our fingers (and my toes--his are too swollen) crossed. He is now on day 3 out of the hospital. A record of late :)
Have a Happy 4th of July, everyone! "

" Karen,
If Jim likes bananas, you might try them. They are very (?) high in potassium and good for him.

4th of July?? - not sure that appears on my calendar!!!

" Good afternoon my friend :)
Yep, both Lasix and Aldactone are what I take and they seem to work quite well...after the docs got the dosages correct. For some time there they had the dosages so high I couldn't stand it. Now my only issues is the 'breast pain' thing....I never heard from anyone that they had that problem before, least of all a man, but it takes away some of the mystery of why I'm taking stock in brassiere companies LOL (Though my husband is pleased). And also, my docs too suggested foods naturally high in potassium such as bananas...good thing I like them...ALOT!
Have a great holiday weekend and glad to hear he's home for the time being :) "

" I too used to be on aldactone and furosemide. There is a dosage point of aldactone that will cause breast pain/ache/tenderness. Usually to balance they should take him right up to that point. "

" Hi Klga, I take 5 mg. zaroxolyn or also known as metolazone the generic name. At first I needed bloodwork each week to check if I was dehydrated. I needed 1/2 pill every day. I take this along with aldactone (100 mg/day). Eventually I was able to take only 1/2 5mg every other day. Lately, I quit taking zaroxolyn & perhaps this has a lot to do with my ascites. I am starting to take zaroxolyn again. At one time I had to take 1 whole tab a day. Ask your doctor if Jim can handle that. It's very potent. My system does not tolerate Lasix. Maybe it will help. "

" I hate to say this but from personal experience I can tell you that at some point in time all the diuretics in the world will not reduce the fluid retention. Near the end I was taking doses that wee destroying my kidneys and was still gaining 3-5 pounds a day with nothing but introveinous feeding. "
