Potassium & Ascites

I am starting to swell up again. I maintained since January, but here I go again. My bloodwork has too much potassium & my doctor is afraid to take me off dieretics. She said the potassium can effect my kidneys and she was not happy with my kidney results. My back hurts & I know I'm in for another parathentisis. So this devil desease continues to give me double whammies. I am very upset. I've been doing so good. Darn it all to hell.

" Craig are you smoking your vitamins? vitamin K (as phytonadione) other ingredients: cellulose, stearic acid, silica magnesium stearate. Potassium( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potas... ) not even closely related ! and has everything to do with pain when my swelling was at it's worse 160 mg of Lasix & 400 mg of spironolactone daily. and Potassium 200mg a day for the cramping as needed! to much can have serious side effects. " I don't think so Shannon. Spiro or aldactone is a potassium sparing diuretic but supplemental potassium, Vit K, still needs to be taken to improve blood clotting.

Why isn't potassium the same as vitamin K?

Answer
Vitamin K is known as Phylloquinone. It is a substance that promotes the clotting of the blood. Potassium, on the other hand, is a chemical element with the periodic symbol \"K\"- they're two different things.

So, am I smoking cracK? Im not sure. It seems we are dealing with two things here, one a vitamin common in fruits esp bananas and the other is a metal primarily produced from Potash.

The potassium I take is Klor-con 1500mg, which is used to improve clotting factor. "

" As always you are all great encouraging helpful people & I really appreciate you all. I am as mixed up as everyone about potassium & protien, but do believe we are all so unique in how this desease effects us. I'm am feeling better today & my spirits are better. It gets me down when I think I'm doing good & then another wammy. Craig, I printed some of your material so I could read it more to try to understand. I hope you are not on crack because then I wasted all my paper & ink cartridges -- Ha!! I was so down I felt like having a drink, but instead went to an AA meeting. On the way there I got a ticket for illegal turn & no seatbelt -- wrong. I sat in the corner & felt sorry for me and no one talked to me which is a good thing. I wasn't a big drinker to begin with except in my younger days, but a drink sounded so good. My husband said I'm the only one he knows that can get in trouble on my way to an AA meeting. I wonder what will happen Sunday when I go to church..... Gotta laugh at myself and this is a good thing. Well take care & God Bless You all. We're all in this together & that means so much to me. Happy 4th of July. "

" Thanks to you for opening up an area of confusion (at least in my eyes) over this. But that's a good thing. We are all here to learn. I'm sorry about your ticket(s), blame shannon and myself! :-)

" Oh....that brings another question for me. I look like I have been beaten up from all of the old and new bruises, and my doctor said to take B12 and folic acid until I get in to see the GI because my platelets are low, but should I pick up some Vit K too? because this doesnt seem to be working...and I am clumsy. hehe. Thank you.

On a different note, the other morning (mornings are the worse for me, no clue why) but as I sat with my head in the toilet, feeling sorry for myself, I started praying and BAM! the toilet seat hit me in the head. I started laughing so hard at myself that wasnt sick anymore, and even alittle up beat. Sometimes the Lord works in some really mysterious (mischievous) ways lovetoall... ;) "
