Hey everyone. I'm not officially diagnosed, but I suspect I have at least mild cirrhosis. My Doc has done the leg bends and felt around my liver and it didn't cause any pain. I've also had an ultrasound that was okay. But, stupid me drank again over the winter. I'm 4 months sober, now.
I've got some "Terry's Nails," or white bands on my fingernails which I've read are a sign. Fatigue as well... My poo is normal, though. Sorry, but I know it's an indicator. I've also lost weight ( about 25 pds. ) and am not regaining like I did when I had Hepatitis. Also, my veins are becoming prominent, especially in my forearms. Anyone know anything about that? So, I'm not sure what to do or what to expect. Can things improve at this point? Any pointers on things I can do to improve matters? Does this even sound like early Cirrhosis? Also, I recall someone talking about Alpha Lipoic Acid. I'd like to hear more on that. Thanks everyone. Posted on 07/01/09, 04:07 am |

Addition: Some other health issues include poor complexion; my skin doesn't seem healthy; gingivitis of lower gums ( not sure if that's strictly dental ); some frequent gait/muscle issues with my legs.
What should I be and not be eating? What medications are a no, no... I've been on Corticosteroids. Is that bad? I'm coming off them now. Also, Soma and Clonazapam. I guess I'd like to know what meds/herbs I should be avoiding. A lot to ask, I know. But, I want to get into better health. I feel like this can be overcame... At least to the best of my ability. Looking forward to replies.

Hi, the only advice I can give you, even if you don't have cirrhosis, is probably what a Dr would give. Is most importantly stay off the booze,
eat a good diet and exercise. It can take a while to recover from Hepatitis 4 months off the sauce is good. Just don't be tempted to start drinking again because things seem better Hope this helps

Your symptoms could be suggestive of many things. Hepatitis can only be diagnosed with blood work. Cirrohsis only by biopsy, though a collection of test results can be suggestive to Dr. I recommend you stop drinking regardless of any illness you may have. I've been sober since 12/03. Then go see a dr. Good luck. JB

Hello,
I would also suggest blood work. I've personally never had a biopsy, but was diagnosed with Cirrhosis last summer. I do know to stay away from meds that contain acetametaphine (sorry, spelling is probably not corrrect, but you know, the ingredient in Tylenol and the like). Of course, no alcohol and as for not gaining weight your doc could probably evaluate what is causing that. At my early stage I had the same problem and my dietary issues had to be addressed. I had the dental issues but that was a blood deficiancy for me. As for me, my doctor set my diet for me and told me what vitamins are best to take. I think each person is different in regard to meds, vitamins, etc. If you have a good doc that's the best thing to start with. Sorry can't be of more help, but my illness is very far advanced and I surely don't want to give advice for what seems like an early illness. Good luck to you and God bless :)

ChelseyAnn,
Sorry to hear that your's is advanced, and you were just diagnosed last Summer? Could you elaborate on the blood deficiency b/c my Gingivitis is nearly impossible to explain. What can be done for it? Also, what Vitamins were recommended for you? Is the prognosis any good for early stage or is this just going to head downhill? I have abstained from alcohol for 4 months now. Thanks to all.

The only 100% sure way to know is a biopsy, although in some cases the signs are so evident you do not really need one or it is too dangerous to perform one.
The diet thing is controversial. The only thing everybody is sure of is do not drink. Craig is doing a "fattening experiment" with himself, but it's best you see your doctor first for any restrictions. If you are in early stage, and depending on the cause of the cirrhosis, the prognosis is supposed to be good, as long as you manage to stop the aggression to the liver and take care of yourself, go regularly to the doctors, etc. Good luck!

Sir or madam , I must agree wholeheartedly with Wontquit`s advice. We sufferers can tell what we did or didn`t do that worked for us but we cannot begin to help until you have some firm diagnosis.
DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, if you do you will never be able to recover from what ails you. It is good that your symptoms are mild.( No swelling?) Thus your prognosis is better than most I think......Jeff

Robbo,
I don't want to be cruel, but are your symptoms in your head rather than real? Far be it from me to dissuade people asking questions on this board, but the questions should arise from some medical fact, rather than mere speculation that you think you might be ill. A doctor is probably the best person to ask about your 'issues'. None of us here are medically qualified to advise you, we can only help people based on our own experience of being diagnosed with and suffering from End Stage Cirrhosis. Craig
