fever after eating and nausea

I am new to the site and thankful that although I have decompensated cirrhosis - from Hep C (likely from the '70's), am in generally good health. We live in Canada, I'm married, in my '50's and have a terrific support system, so I feel very fortunate indeed. I was diagnosed 11 years ago and have not been able to work for about 9 years. That actually makes my husband happy ... he gets more attention :)
Other than troubles during 4 separate treatment periods varying from 6 months to one year each, and ongoing debilitating fatigue, I've been extremely lucky. I've had only one small varisceal bleed. Perhaps I got a little too eager during a yoga session :) None of the really serious symptoms although I'm starting to get some large red marks on my face and neck and some itching. My specialist is very helpful and monitors my condition regularly (ultrasound and bloodwork every 6 months, endoscopy once a year). I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs and haven't for many many years. The liver clinic in our hospital also has a (free) psychologist who deals specifically with liver disease and I have taken advantage of all the tools she teaches for coping. It's been a godsend. So far, I've been able to stay off any meds for depression. I'm, wondering if anyone has some experience with fever after eating and general nausea. How do I prevent fever after eating? Lately I find that eating anything increases the frequency of low grade fever. My diet is low protein because all the reading I've done indicates that at decompensated cirrhosis stage a person should eat more complex carbohydrates and less protein. I don't like meat much and am having difficulties with my gall bladder so anything that's hard to process I avoid (pork, spinach, beans, some vegetables). I get more protein from yogurt and cheese. Lately I just eat one small meal at mid-day and small handfuls of things like tortilla chips later in the day (it seems to help with nausea). I try and drink lots of herbal tea because I can't seem to swallow water easily. Have tried natural remedies but have had many many adverse reactions, so avoid them like the plague! What about physical activity causing nausea? Lately I find exercising is causing troubles with nausea. Treatment took a huge toll even though I was a non responder and getting back to daily exercise nearly impossible. We live in a mountainous area and the hills just do me in now. Any help would be appreciated. Sincere thanks, Deb in Canada These are new symptoms to me. Posted on 11/01/09, 11:11 am |

Welcome ! I am by no means an expert on any of this. The fever after eating just sounds out of the ordinary. the nausea is probably due to the gall bladder issues. My husband is the one with esld but I have had major issues with that and I think my experiences have helped me watch what I give him to eat. It helps to have him not get hungary try to keep something in his stomach all the time to help bring down the acid. He drinks a lot of alka setlzer as the over the counter meds just don't do it for him. I keep low salt crackers around too.
God Bless, Sharon

Sorry, but that's a new one. Are you on any medication that might trigger the nausea?

I reread you email and am wondering if the tortilla chips might be high in fat or pepper, which, I guess, might be taxing on your stomach, with the gall bladder problems and all.

Wow, that was fast. chuck52 - thanks for the info about gallbladder and making sure you don't get hungry ... good reminder. I was hospitalized with a gb infection but it wasn't stones and I did have quite a problem with acid for a while. This feels very different than gallbladder though.
wontquit (good name by the way) ... I'm only on low dose nadolol to prevent varisces now. The fever doesn't surprise me (have had 10 yrs of it) ... except it's so noticeable right after meals now. Maybe it is partly the tortilla chips although I don't eat them every day (they're whole grain, low fat and very little spice) but they probably aren't the best choice. Low salt soda crackers might be a better choice. I'm waiting for the written results of my last endoscopy (Oct 20th) so perhaps there are other changes there re stomach even though I know there were no varisces. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had similar symptoms and knew what to do about the fever after eating. The nausea is mostly when I exercise (sorry if I was unclear about that). thanks for your help!!!! I apppreciate it. Deb

Besides the nausea, do you feel dizzy when you exercise?
Are you sure that, when you work out, you are properly hydrated and have recently (20 minutes or so) eaten some source of easy to digest carbs ? BTW, sorry to intrude, but have you had decomp cirrhosis for 11 years or hep for 11 years?

to wontquit ... no, I don't experience any dizziness when exercising, just nausea. I only do gentle exercises such as go for walks and do yoga. Other efforts to get in shape after treatment have resulted in me hurting myself or being hospitalized and I admit I'm a bit stymied as to how to get stronger.
When I feel well enough I ride my bike, or go to deep water workout, or swim. Now that you mention it, I have not been making sure I'm hydrated and have eaten before I exercise. I'll try and remember that. I do remember having a similar problem during treatment. I had bad nausea just trying to walk the dog during my peg/intron days - for a year. My doc thinks I've had Hep C for 30 years. Cirrhosis diagnosis was about 6 years ago, and decompensated cirrhosis for 2 years (once I had a bleed). When I was ill in '79, it was diagnosed as "non A non B Hepatitis" as they didn't know that much about it or call it Hep C then ... and I was hospitalized for about a week with severe symptoms that went away for 20 years. Return of the symptoms is what prompted the diagnosis of Hep C in the late 80's and subsequent diagnoses. I will admit I have a tendency to go into denial when I'm feeling well and am not vigilant or consistent about how I take care of myself ... tend to overdo when I can. Perhaps it's just me, but I seem to have symptoms for a while before I clue in and realize it's something new or something that needs attention (human nature?) Thanks again !! Deb

My husband Jim has a terrible problem with nausea and vomiting after eating. We have no idea why. Any advice would be helpful to us too. He is also decompensated.

I agreee with your suspision. excercise, lifting weight, eating, all cause nausia and fever for me. I am stage 5+. like yourself am not doing any meds.I have no gall bladder so it can,t be that. I find putting my feet up, and laying down after eating helpful. It's my opinion a haven,t got enough energy to digest food and sit up. As soon as i lay down it begins to subside. I perspire perfusely about the head, neck and chest. Iv come to the conclusion my liver would much prefere it if i didn,t even try to eat. Eating, or even thinking about it causes nausia for me. I feel so very much better when i respect my overall weakness. I agree with chuck52.having safe nibbles around is helpful.
My calory intake has dropped to around 3,500cl. per week. mostly thats force fed to myself. my weight has dropped by 10kgs,in 3mnths. The Knack is summed up in an old Canadian expression. " Eat what you can, Can what you can,t." Worry will only make it worse i think.(In it together!) God Bless! J

Hi again Canada, you shouldn,t be having salt atall really. A non sweet biscuit like British " Rich tea bisciuts " would be better than low fat soda bisciuts. Bananas maybe. Good luck.!! (Salt increases the risk of necrosis and Cancer.) J.

Thanks, hiphophep ... you just described how I feel. It is getting to the stage where I feel like maybe it's not worth eating anything (and I've always loved food). Dang it! :)
MAN OH MAN do I understand "respecting your weakness". Nobody really understands weak much in my world. So, thanks for that. ALTHOUGH, I'm thankful to find someone who understands these symptoms, I'm sad to hear how severe it is. WOW - I was looking for support and I found a community! I will try all the suggestions given and thanks everyone.
