How do I calculate INR in MELD?

I have my sister's lab results, and I see where everthing needed to calculate MELD is located except for INR. From what I have read, I believe it is several things (clotting factor, hematocrit, etc...) but am unsure how to calculate THIS factor.
Does anybody know how to interpret the lab results to calculate this? Help is greatly appreciated! Merry Posted on 10/18/09, 03:10 pm |

If you have a reference to Prothrombin/INR time in, number of seconds about 10 +or- that is what you use for the MELD. You cannot calculate it yourself.

Is there a name for the test to get all the components that make up a meld score or are there 3 different tests? For myself, I was diagnosed in 4/09 and went back months later to review the results and was suprised that I actually had a meld score.. Can I request a specific blood test ?? I have phlebotomies weekly so its easy to get a blood test done..
Thanks Randy

INR is not often included in a normal liver panel for some reason.
Prothrombin time tends not to be used these days as the result can be variable depending on what type of analytical system it is performed. This is due to the differences between different batches of manufacturer's tissue factor used in the reagent to perform the test. The INR was devised to standardize the results. Prothrombin time is usually between 12 and 15 seconds. The INR reference range is 0.8 to 1.2 The MELD calculator I use from UNOS only asks for INR. If the INR test was not done I use a value of 1.0 as a guesstimate. http://www.unos.org/resources/Meld... Craig

In answer to your question, Randy, The test is called an Hepatic Function test and the INR test needs to be requested also.
