My father was diagonosed with fatty liver in Mexico, when he came back to the US, they say he has cirrhosis, although I have never seen a test that says he has it. He just got medical insurance. I was taking him to a clinic and a general pract. They have not recommended any other Dr.s. What types a Dr.s should he be seeing? He has a appt. at the liver center to discuss transplant but not until November.
He has ascietes and has had it drained twice but it comes back with in days, they are playing with the diruetics to see if that helps. He is very unconfortable and has a hard time sleeping. Posted on 08/02/09, 11:08 pm |

A hepatologist ou a gastroenterologist - GI with experience in treating cirrhosis. A hepatologist is a GI who specializes in liver diseases.

Wontquit gave you the correct advice. A gastroenterologist with a "Fellowship" training is an acceptble doctor-."hepatologist" is a liver specialist also is your best choice.

I just noticed in your post that he is going to a liver center, surley he will be seen by a specialist. But ask to reassure your self, you have the right to ask questions, and doen't let them make you feel ignorant. We ask questions to keep from being ignorant, and to educate ourselves. Meanwhile, see if you can get him into a doctor, mentioned above. Good luck, stay strong and keep in touch.

Ascites is a pain to deal with. Jim's just doesn't want to go away. He was drained (10.5) on August 26, again on August 31 (9.2) and again yesterday, September 13 (9.). Albumin is what is missing that allows the ascites to be present, and egg WHITES are full of albumin so Jim's transplant surgeon said to eat a minimum of 12 egg whites a day and lots and lots of protein.
