Hi Everyone,
My mother has cirrhosis of the liver. In the last month or so she has been experiencing alot of muscle weakness and pain. She has been seen by her doctors and they have pretty much ruled out anything serious like cancer. Does anyone here experience muscle weakness/pain? If yes, are there any current medications or treatments for it. Thank you very much for your help. Any input is greatly appreciated. Posted on 06/30/09, 08:06 pm |

My husband suffers from terrible muscle spasms leg and hands. We have been told its possibly dehydration and the famous. Its all part of the disease. He finds relieve in running hot water over his hands and when his legs are real bad he sits in a hot bathtub. They seem to be worse at night. He doesn't take any pain meds at all. I would ask your dr first before taking anything.

Hi Jem123,
I too have cirrhosis and suffer from muscle weakness and pain. I ache so bad at night that I cannot sleep without a hot bath and a pain pill. I take vicodin and that helps me. Is her pain mostly at night? I hope she can find relief, the aching was so bad for me I felt like I was losing my mind somedays. Good luck to her.

Chuck52 -
There may be some relief for your husband. I get the cramps in my legs and hands. There is a product called CALM. You can find it on the net and in health food stores. It is a fast absorbing magnesium powder. I suggest the Lemon flavor. Once you take it the cramps are gone in about 15 minutes (for me at least) and if I see it coming I can forestall the cramps completely. An anti-diarrhea medication combined with the CALM is a good idea because it makes you "loose" (grin) I take it and then walk the cramps out until it takes effect. I've checked it with my hepatologist who said ok. But always check these things with the doc. Hope this helps him out.

I too had loss of muscle and pain. But not cramps. I couldn't do much about it as I wasn't stable enough on my feet to exercise. Sorry I have no suggestions.
