Does lactulose ever stop working?

Today we went to the reunion and my fiance was having a lot of stomach pain throughout the day. He has maintained the dose of lactulose the dr told him to take, however, he told me today that he has not had a bm since yesterday. Could this be causing his stomach pain? whay is the lactulose not working now? And he increased the dose today above what the dr ordered.He was also more jaundiced than usual today. Despite all this he was in good spirits. Thanks for the responses

It's kind of like bad gas pain keep telling your dr I've never heard of it stop working My amonnia levels go why up if I don't take it, makes my mind go crazy, just keep the dr's posted

I would call the doc, he may need to take more !! I have NEVER heard of lactulose "stop working"....if he hasn't had a bm in three days call the doc now if you haven't already !!! Keeping you both in my prayers...Janet
