A 'Funny' story...

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day, and while we were talking, she hit her 'funny bone' really hard on the corner of my computer desk.
I let her cry for a bit, and when she felt better enough to talk again, I had an interesting idea.
I asked her if she really wanted to understand how I feel. When she said yes, I told her to think about how her elbow felt right after the tingling started to go away. Painful, right? So then I said-imagine that in every joint all over your body! That is how my body feels on most days, and on the really bad days, multiply that by 10.
She started to cry a bit, but she now at least has some idea of what it's like to be someone with chronic pain...

" I tried something similar with my husband but it didn't work. He was really sick one night and in a lot of pain. I told him that if he could imagine feeling that way every day for years then he might have an inkling on how I feel. He said that if he had that pain that long he would have gotten used to it and not let him affect him anymore. But I'm glad it worked for your friend. "

" One of my friends told me that she had read an article on people with chronic pain. One of the points the article made was that people in chronic pain actually become more sensitive to pain rather than building up a resistance to it.

I thought that was true in my case. I find that I am much more sensitive to everyday pain, such as banging my elbow that what I used to be. I really think my overall pain threshold is much lower.

So I don't think your husband would get used to being in pain. Who the hell does? What a cynical remark to make. Kinda makes me mad just reading it, I can imagine how hurt you must have been. "

" people just cant really understand because most pain they have from small injuries or the flu or from tired over worked muscles will heal after a short time......be we who suffer from chronic/intractable pain know that we are going to hafta deal with it every day every hour every minute for the rest of our life......and our medication only makes the pain bearable if we are lucky....but most of them who are givin pain meds for their pain get total relief until they heal up....ive only found a very few outside of ds who understand....and its because they have chronic pain from spine issues like i do....i wish my pain on no one.....and the mental pain is just as bad as the physical....because we have been robbed of who we were and what we used to be able to do....i was always the go to guy when friends need help or advice....now ive isolated myself from most because they expect me to be who i was....the only way they will ever get it is if they suffer a injury or desease that isnt going to get better....so in my heart i really hope they never understand.....they can read every thing that deals with chronic pain and what it does to the body mind and emotions but its just words until it happens to you :( "

" I remember when trying to talk to my insurance company, when they would be ridicuolous about either approving my meds or taking too long to send them to me (before I got the OK to fill them at my pharmacy, I HAD to use the mail order pharmacy for everything except Sched II med) I would say, "Have you even bitten into an ice cream cone, or something really cold? You know that pain that shoots into your nose and your eye, and over the top of your head, and down your arm into your body?" Usually they would say, "Yes, that's pretty awful" Then I'd say, "Imagine that pain, in your head, multiply it by 8 or 10, then imagine it NOT only lasting a minute or two, while you are in so much pain you cannot speak or move. Then imagine it lasting the last 20 years, 24 hours a day., 7 days a week, with little relief. EXCEPT for the meds, which for some reason YOUR company is taking forever to either approve or SEND overnight to me. Can you do that? I don't want your sympathy. I couldn't care less, I just want my meds so THAT PAIN you are now trying to imagine but can't, which I live with EVERY DAY will be at least pushed into the background enough so I can get out of bed and maybe move."

It sometimes worked. I don't use this on friends or family, as it is too cruel. But, it is just enough to use on evil insurance company workers. And every bit of it true. "
