" Actually they are not the same. MS contin is morphine. Oxycontin is oxycodone. Both are sustained release preparations, but the base drug is not the same. Odd that a pharmacist would tell you they are. They are both good pain medications though, and I would not worry too much about changing to MS contin. If it works, run with it....

" thanks, i will try it, i just don't know why i am so alignated because of cp, it is like anyone who doesn't have it, sees it as lazyness or addiction, it is so hard to be alone all the time. esp when i met someone i liked, i don't like to lie to people about my disablity. but sometimes it is like they leave me no choice. so i am alone again., "

" The pharmacist probably meant that the MS Contin dose was equivalent to your OxyContin dose. You can double-check using a narcotic equivalency chart or a dose converter (there's many available on the net). "

" When I went to the VA, the switched me from 120 mg of oxycontin to 120 mg of ms contin, about 2/3 in strength. It cost me a job due to the increased pain. Finally, after 2 years they bumped it up to 180mg of ms contin and my life improved dramatically overnight. "

" I was orginally on Kadian for my pain, then switched to Oxycontin which seemed to do "ok" keeping the "edge off". At the beginning of this year, I switched again to Ms Contin, purely for cost reasons, as the other drugs became too expensive for me. The Ms Contin makes me soooooo sick and nauseated that I cannot even take the full dose prescribed even after 7 months of taking it.

I just talked to my doctor on Wednesday (8/5) about this to see if I could take something else but we decided to wait until I find out if I will need a 3rd back surgery. I am glad to hear that others can take it without any negative side effects. If only, I could take the full dose, maybe it would make a difference with my pain.

Hugs to All! ~Carrie "

" it has an amazeing effect of settleing my gut, and not makeing me sick, isn't that funny how we are all different, i like the effect of feeling no pain , and no gut issues, but i have colitis and ibs, so maybe that is why, i am on 30mg twice daily, and it is starting to work well. i can go up, because my doctor says, that oycodone and mscontin aren't good to combine, so i need to swicth over to ms contin completely, which is okay with me, i think it just has this stigma, but actually oycotine is about as strong and addictive. i don't care, i just don't want to be in pain.i am going to need back surgery soon too. thanks all sorry for rambleing. " Oh I LOVE our in-house pharmacist !! Friedey .. LOVE..LOVE I have recently changed meds too, and I'm not sure if it's me with the depression. Which I won't repeat, but too much death in the past year and half, oh and lets throw in a horrible divorce too. Like freakin soup just throw it all in !! Its mainly like my cooking too. BUT mos def I have to check the Ms vs oxycodone. My ins. won't cover the oxycontin, and I was on Lortab for 13 yrs. I just can't figure this black hole I'm in, but yet I can !!! Does anyone know what I mean???? Hugs and Love, Deb "
