Well i'm not sure where to begin, probley with why I need to see pain managment.I have RA,fibro,CFS and the newest and most painful AS [ankylosing spondylitis].I'm still new to this, but it involves your neck, back and bone's in genral.I had neck surgery 10-07 to remove bone spurs.Well I fell and hurt myself again,i've been in PT for month's with no relief. So now were looking at surgery on my neck seem's i moved a bone to the left of my spine.Well i'm under rheumo for RA and she takes care of pain issues, but she will not give me anything stronger than vicodine so we decided to try pain Dr.Well the pain Dr. says i'm red flaged by him because I already have pain med.s ,smoke cig.,and i've been in recovery for 16 yr.Now i've been on pain meds for 15 yr.s never once abusing them.So I left his office in a daze.I'd love to hear someone eles input on this.

mine use to complain about the smoking, something about nicotin receptors in your back, and smoking making back pain worse. But, he never refused to treat me because of it. Wow! Ask your rhem doctor to recommend a pain specialist or call your American Medical Association, explain to them and ask for recommendation to a pain specialist. You got a bad one, don't let it stop you in your search for relief, we have alot of the same health problems my friend.

I'm lucky with my Doc in Los Angeles because he works with me and any suggestions I make. I am surprised that your Rhuematologist wont work with you because thats who I have. I dont even bother with GP's anymore when it comes to pain issues. HOWEVER, since I have been stuck in Chicago waiting for my back pay (still) I cant get a Doctor to do what I need to save my life. I went to one about a month ago and without any examination, she looked at my sheet of meds and said I'm not prescribing these. I say if it works it works and they need to pull the sticks from their arses. The best thing I can suggest is that you find the Rhuemos, or pain Docs in your area and call and speak to their nurses. I have found this very effective. The nurses are willing to tell you just about anything you want to know. I ask age, demeanor, prescribing ethics and they pretty much spill their guts. Since they cant discuss it at the office because of the whole office gossip thing, they love to talk to potential patients.
I've noticed more and more lately that these Doctors want to do surguries that in my research are not neccesary and seem to make things worse. They also cause a lot of referred pain. I read this study where if you have an injured area (this includes surgical) that your body rewires your nerve pain block path. Sort of going around a car in front of you which causes issues in other areas. There's no way that I would have a surgery to remove my spurs unless I couldnt move because of them. In the end I think it causes more harm than good. But again just my opinion. Call around for Docs and see how that works for you.

yes Doctors can be like that. I think the reason is because like everyone else said there alot of people that take meds and abuse them. Me I only take when I'm in pain. which is everyday. I asked my doctor to make my pain meds dose higher but she said no. So now I take more than what she said. Thats the only way I get any relief. The only thing about that your meds run out quicker and your doctor wont give u more. I hope you get some new help.

I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND!!! My current *wonderful* doc constantly tries to blame my herniated disc and sciatica in both legs on being sexually abused as a child, rather than doing about 9 years of intensive gymnastics and almost every other sport under the sun!!! I'm going to a new doc asap, I just need to muster the energy. It's sooo hard to find a person willing to treat you as a human, rather than a cash cow or a threat to their practice. I'm on the lowest dose of my med, have been for a few months, and my doc refused to increase it when I adjusted to it. Also, HE ASKED ME when I needed my med refilled, I was caught off guard, normally that's his job, I tried to count quickly, was off by about 3 days, and he gave me the most disgusting look I've ever seen, like I did it on purpose even though I said specifically I wasn't sure and to not take my word for it because I counted fast in the bottle. Those months with controlled pain were AMAZING! Now to be thrown back into the mess, it's a slap in the face and a blow to my spirit. I guess they don't teach about tollerance or titration in medical school anymore. I've known since day one that this doc isn't right for me, but out of pure lack of energy, and not wanting to have to tell the whole story again, I've stayed and suffered. It sounds like you've got a good rheumy, so just try talking it out with her. I'm sure with some research (try ratemds.com), and maybe a good word from the rheumy, you will be able to find a doc that will work with you rather than make insane accusations and misjudgements. That's just plain ignorant, you deserve to be treated as a human with a good track record. I know how hard it is to get your hopes up that this new doc will help you and then you get shit on. I'll keep you in my positive thoughts!!! Keep fighting the good fight!!!
Much love and understanding, Lisa

im kind of on a roll today so bear with me: what an asshole....im sorry but i dont give a rats ass if you are in recovery or not, NO ONE DESERVES to suffer...and this is cruel in my book. yes, you should be super proud of the yrs. under your belt as i commend you...anyway you dont need to put up with this shit...can you get a name/referral/etc. with a PM doc who is also an addictionologist? that may be a start...i think that some doctors abuse the 'power' they think they have...BUT DONT FORGET-THE DOC WORKS FOR YOU!
