Well i'm not sure where to begin, probley with why I need to see pain managment.I have RA,fibro,CFS and the newest and most painful AS [ankylosing spondylitis].I'm still new to this, but it involves your neck, back and bone's in genral.I had neck surgery 10-07 to remove bone spurs.Well I fell and hurt myself again,i've been in PT for month's with no relief. So now were looking at surgery on my neck seem's i moved a bone to the left of my spine.Well i'm under rheumo for RA and she takes care of pain issues, but she will not give me anything stronger than vicodine so we decided to try pain Dr.Well the pain Dr. says i'm red flaged by him because I already have pain med.s ,smoke cig.,and i've been in recovery for 16 yr.Now i've been on pain meds for 15 yr.s never once abusing them.So I left his office in a daze.I'd love to hear someone eles input on this.

These pain management physicians can be really bad news, I'm sorry you had to come across one with a nasty, punitive attitude. It also doesn't look good if we appear to be 'shopping around' for a new one. It's just a matter of luck, keep trying...and please don't give in to paranoia. That's what the bad ones give a good person!

did you ask your primary doctor who is giving you the pain meds now call him and ask him to see you that you need more of a specialist for pain, i am not a big fan of pain management doctors, they have a tendency to think the worst right off the bat, and yea i get it they get more people trying to get pain meds but when a person has multiple problems and has the proof through mri and surgeries they should know the difference
sorry for your bad experience, maybe ask you doc to call him and try to straighten it out, because now that you seen him it will look bad to go and find a new doctor you know

i smoke and never has the pain speaclist being like towards meShe is nice and understands why people in chronic pain tend to smoke.
I would go back and see rheump doctor and tell him/her about it. I would also get the notes from pain clinic and show them to her/him. Not all pain speaclist are like this.My pain speaclist laughs all the time and ask me how i want treatment done.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Pain management is getting harder and harder with all the junkies out there. I know for me anyway I never use to have an opinion on junkies, as long as they didn't break into people houses I didn't care what they did. Pain issues have changed this, makes me want to beat them up for making things harder on the rest of us!
I do not have much in the way of advice for you but I offer my best wishes that you get what you need.

I just love that these docs that after spending 5 minutes with someone can make all these character observations! Who do they think they are? Unfortunately this is getting to be more the norm.
Are there other PM docs? I have been very lucky that the 2 different docs I have been to have been great. My current PM is fantastic. I did do alot of research on both though before I went to them. I'm sorry you got treated badly, hopefully you can find a new one who is not a jerk! It's too bad your rheumy won't prescribe someting stronger for you. My first rheumy refused to give out any narcotics, he was a real gem(not). He gave me a piece of paper with stretches on it and told me to get new shoes. He lasted about 10 minutes. I don't know what they are teaching some of these guys at med school! Melissa

Melissa -
I totally hear you about not knowing what these guys are learning in med school......seems like so many are learning how to be useless while still getting payout from your insurance co! Idiots! Anyway bigsis - I am soooooooo sorry for what you experienced. I read your profile, and it sounds like you have one hellish time. My heart goes out to you! And then to have a pain doctor treat you this way?!?! I don't know whether to call this guy a douche or a turd sandwich. This whole situation seems like a steaming pile o' crap. Does he not understand that the reason you're seeing him is that your doctor does not feel competent (and probably rightfully so) in prescribing medication stronger than vicodin? Why does that deserve a "red flag"???? As for the cigarettes, that is COMPLETELY stupid, especially considering your excellent history of using pain medication responsibly. WOW. I don't know how you or your doc found this idiot, but I would do some major research and find a pain management doctor who is most likely to not be a moron on your first visit. I truly wish the best for you!!! With lots of caring, Orchid

I would suggest finding another PM. This guy doesn't sound like he is worth trying to convince. You have a good record with pain meds and don't let them make you feel like you are asking for something you don't honestly need. Take Care!

I feel terrible but not surprised that you had this experience. I went through a similar experience which is why I am looking for a new doctor. I also have never abused my medication but they treat you like I would imagine the cops treat drug dealers. I've been calling family doctors and family practice clinics; two told me they do not accept patients with chronic pain. I have already been to the only pain management doctor in my area (the treatment didn't work). When I recently called and asked if he could take over with my pain meds since I don't have a doctor anymore, they said I had to get them from my family doctor. Do these people even listen? So I will have to keep looking, even if I have to go somewhere farther away. Keep trying; somewhere there has to be some good doctors for us. Good luck
