hi all--i go to my p.m. appt this afternoon so i apologize for the late notice--i am currently taking oxycontin 20mg-morning and evening and oxycodone 10/325mg 3 times per day for breakthru...the oxycontin is not covered by my insurance but apparently MS Contin is--can anyone tell me if this is as good (in your opinion of course) as oxy, does it make you dizzy, sleepy, euphoric, etc. i have 4 kids and i really need to be coherent and active...not nodding off at 10am...any input on this med would be great...the oxycontin 20mg isnt really cutting it as i have breakthru within a couple hrs. of taking it...thanks all for the help! krissy

" Hi ~ I was on MS Contin for quite a long time. I was taking 180mg per day, and it didn't make me loopy, sleepy or euphoric. MS Contin is a purer form of Morphine, which the Oxy is synthetic.

I felt (in the beginning) that it did a wonderful job at managing the pain. Towards the end, I was having problems tho as I became tolerant of the dosage, and my doc was reluctant to raise the dosage (sound familiar?). So ~ I kept taking what I was given, and suffered. LOL.

I'm not on it now cause that doctor retired, and my new doc put me on Methadone, for some reason.

I'd say in MY opinion that yes, MS Contin works better (I have taken Oxy for a short time). Best of luck and I hope it works well for you! God bless. Hugs, Lee "

" I take it, I love it. I also have to take breakthrough meds but who here doesn't.

What I like is that I can take it three times per day which really cuts down on the other meds on good days. "

" MS Contin is a reliable pain control as is oxycontin. The key is to get to a dose high enough to control tthe pain.

A for break through pain I would ask for OxyIR. It the same narcotic as your break through with out the base drug. Needing more narcotic is fine but the base is usually tylenol or aspirin which is just one more thing your liver has to clean. Your liver is already working very hard to break down the narcotic and it makes no sense to add work for an ingredient that isn't helping. "

" I currently use Kadian for log acting and MSIR for BT pain. I was taking MS Contin but my insurance did not cover the Brand name only generic. I think its very important to get the brand names particularly when using narcotics. I seem to have more pain relief and less side effects.
For me. I HATE Oxycontin. This is one of the meds that gave me the most side effects, caused me to suffer insomnia more often, much more depression, including thoughts of suicide. You couldn't pay me enough money to take it ever again.
But thats my reaction, I can only offer my experiences to you.
I think Kadian and MS Contin are pretty much the same drug. They are both long acting morphine. The MSIR I use for breakthrough is Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release, thus the MSIR. "

" For information purposes:
OxyContin is a long acting narcotic containing Oxycodone. There is no "base" added to OxyContin.
OxyIR is Immediate release oxycodone, not lasting as long a time as the OxyContin which is why it is used for breakthrough pain not as the main pain relief.

Oxycodone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics. It works by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.

Oxycodone is also available in combination with acetaminophen (Endocet, Percocet, Roxicet, Tylox, others); aspirin (Endodan, Percodan, Roxiprin, others); and ibuprofen (Combunox).
The above named drugs are the only form that Oxycodone comes with a "base" such as Tylenol, aspirin or ibuprofen.
Just to clear the info given here.Med-line is a wonderful and very accurate site to learn about any drug you want to know about. "
