Advice:
My pain meds don't work anymore? Help Please
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
I've been on Ms Contin 60 mg 3 x a day with oxycodone 15 mg 3 x a day for breakthrough pain for about 4 months now. I know that my disease is getting worse daily. But I need more relief. I know the pain meds are helping but it's just not enough anymore. My pain doc is very understanding he'll probably switch me to methadone. That scares me because I've heard several people say it didn't help them at all. Yet some of you swear by it. My quality of life is horrible, I can't work cause I can't sit or stand for more than 15 mins at a time without severe pain. I can't use my hands to pick up things, open a jar, lift a skillet to cook, typing and writing causes to much pain to bear. I'm so tired of this crap. I want a miracle drug so I can resume some type of normalcy.

Any and all advice is welcome and needed.

Hugs to all, Marci

" when you take medications your body builds up a tolerance to them, so what you take works for a while then it stops working.
i would talk to your doctor about it and explore other medications like tramadol etc.
my medications were working for a while then it felt like i was in so pain after a couple of months of them, so i talked to the doctor and he increased some of them and added some more on.
i talked to my doctor today about methadone and what he had to say about it has put me totally of it.
look on the net and ask around as their are lots of meds, what works for some does and others it doesn't.
hope your able to find some relief soon. "

" Marci,
There are no miracle drugs, but you may respond better to one opioid than another. Try the methadone. What do you have to lose? The morphine is already not working well for you. If that doesn't work you could try Opana ER, Dilaudid, or fentanyl patches for long-term. I'm glad your pain doc is open to different approaches.

" It sounds like you built up a tolerance to them. That's kinda what I'm going thru right now. I've tried methadone and loved it. I can't take it because my already sensitve stomach doesn't agree with it. But it took my pain away nicely. Give it a try. Best of luck to you!

" Marci,
I have been on Methadone 80 Mg's for 2 years now and it has been a God send for me. It is the only medication that I've taken that has not given me any side effects, but then again, everyone is different....
Allow him to try the Methadone. Start at a low dosage and titrate to a dosage that will help your awful pain.
I was scared of Methadone at the beginning, but after been on it for a while now, I can tell you that is the best thing that happened to me. Take care Hun and I hope that you find your answers soon!

Hugs, "

" Hi Marci,

I've been taking pain meds for close to 3 years now. You do build up a tolerance to the meds after a time. For the past year and half I have been taking various doses of Oxycodone and Oxycontin. One for long term action and one for breakthrough pain. After the last adjustment of dosage the doctor and I decided to try a different medication.

He put me on Avinza (I believe that is how you spell it). and after two weeks I had to stop taking it. It had some rather awful side effects. I told him I do not want to take it ever again. (I've found being able to go to the bathroom is much better than being out of pain but not being able to go at all :( ).

So he now switched me to Opana ER and Opana non ER for breakthrough pain. And to me that works fantastic. I haven't had this much relief from pain aside from being in the ER and having IV Daludid (sp?).

Try the new medication. If it doesn't work, have your doctor try something else. Don't stop until you find the medication that will work for you. I understand what it is to want a wonder drug, believe me. I think we all do and we can all understand how you are feeling.

*gentle hugs*

I hope you find the best medication for you and you get some pain relief soon.

" It is normal to build a tolerance. You just have to keep upping your dosage the longer you are on them. If your doctor wont do it, get a new one who realizes this.

Is surgery an option? Sometimes it helps, other times it can make some people worse, but its worth considering. "

" I feel your pain...literally! I do get some relief from my meds but for a while now, it never seems to be enough to feel functional. As someone who used to be a type A person, doing 10 things at a time, it's really hard when you feel like you can't do even one! I also noticed on your page you said you expected the warm weather and sunshine to help... I just made the same comment a few days ago. I had hoped when the pain was severe this winter that the warm weather would bring relief. It hasn't and I know how frustrating it is to count on that. Like the others have said, every person is different and you just need to find what works for you. It can't hurt to try a new med and it's great that you have a good pain specialist who will work with you. If the methadone doesn't work, then there are many others to try. I have the same problem with my hands and I get extremely frustrated with it. It seems they are either too painful to use them, or they are so numb that I drop everything I try to pick up. It's enough to make you want to scream!
I hope the methadone works for you and you get some relief soon!! Keep us updated. Warm hugs. "

" My advice to you, is to talk to your doc about trying Suboxone. I have been on it for a year at 24mg. It's worth a try before you find yourself addicted to all the pain meds!! Good luck! "
