Help with terrible back pain with 4 herniated disc
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
I just had an MRI and it shows 4 herniated disc's and major disc degeneration. I have been asking my Dr for about 5 years now to please prescribe something that will help with pain and he wouldn't. Now that I have the MRI shouldn't the Dr give me pain medication?? I live in the Columbus Ohio area so if anyone knows of a Dr or clinic that will help me please let me know.

Thanks

" Thanks for the reply kmiller. Well I just got the MRI done yesterday but I called my Dr and told him it showed I had 4 herniated discs and major DDD and the nurse said he didn't want to see me that he would see me at the already schedule apt a few weeks from now. I made an apt with a new Dr and see him tomorrow. I just don't want to be looked at like I'm trying to get drugs, I JUST WANT THE PAIN TO GO AWAY. "

" MLMM,
Good for you! Thats great you were able to get in to see another dr. You should not have to suffer like this! A long time ago when I had foot surgery the podiatrist I saw gave me a script pre op for vicodin. 10 pills to last 2 weeks after cutting bone from my foot? I went to see him 9 days later and asked for a refill because I was still having bad pain and he refused stating he didn't agree with me being in pain. I should be out dancing right now. I ended up never going back to the practice and just let it heal on it's own (turned out fine). No showed the next appt, they called me to ask where I was and I told them to tell the dr I was out dancing!! There are a few drs out there that just refuse to treat pain. They got burned somewhere down the line and now we all have to pay for it. Keep us posted on how your appt goes tommorow! xoxox "

" Thanks so much kmiller, I'm just sooo glad someone other than me really thinks that will 4 herneated discs that I'm really in pain. Do you have experience being prescribed narcotics for a long period of time? I'm wondering if I should ask the Dr tomorrow if he should refer me to pain clinic. I've heard Dr don't like to prescribe narcotics on a long term basis.

Thanks for your advice!!!! "

" I too went thru exactly what your going thru. My neurosurg prescribed vicodin to me for about a year post op. Which is highly unusual. Then we talked and she wanted me to go to my GP for medications. My GP had moved to another practice that I didn't know of so I just decided to not take meds for about 3 months. I couldn't take the pain anymore so I tracked my GP down and made an appt with her. She took one look at me and said "you need to be on pain medication right now". I actually worked with her at a clinic so she knew me and trusted me. After about 6 months of that she referred me over to a spine specialist who said they don't believe in narcotics and they actually make the pain worse..? Rriigghhtt. So then they ended up referring me to pain management who did a 2 hours exam on me. The dr said yeah your a wreck and need to be on something higher then vicodin so they started me on oxy. Make a long story short I ended up taking the advice of a young lady on here that gave the name of an excellent RA dr who is now managing my pain. It took about 3 appts with him before he prescribed me anything, because I never asked. I let him make the call and he finally did. So I spoke to my GP on the phone and told her my RA dr is now prescribing me meds and she agreed that was a good idea. The worst thing in the world I hate is asking a dr for narcotics. I don't know why but it's very difficult for me to do this. My RA doctor is very easy to talk to and doesn't want me to suffer. It may take you finding the right dr who is willing to work with you and treat your pain. I really don't think your gonna have any problems. You have 4 herniated discs for goodness sake! If this next dr says no meds I will be very surprised..Did you check out ratemds? It has patient comments you can read about the dr. Very helpful for me. I really hope you get treated soon. Pain can do so much mental and physical damage. I think drs forget this at times. Keep us posted!! xoxox

" Unfortunately some doctors don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. I think maybe you need a new doctor. You definately are not trying to get pain meds just because. Poor thing, I am sorry that you have been living in this pain all this time. Sometimes I would love for a doctor to walk a half a day in our shoes and then see what it is like. I wish you the best and hope that you get some relief soon. "

" ok, ask your doctor for something like gapentin.. it is for nerve pain which is what you have. i am on it. and while it does not kill it , it really takes the edge off. i have nerve damage caused by cancer and that is what they gave me.

your disc's are pinching off the nerves, hence the pain. "

" We all have the right to be free from pain but look at us, trying to suffer not to appear that we are "drug seekers". The one thing that keeps me from going down the road of needless suffering is that if you are unmedicated, it causes you to move less and less movement will end up causing more problems and issues and then you will end up needing more than you would have if you just took it to begin with. Crap 4 herniated discs! I guess you must have some killer stamina because I could never go without narcotics if that was me. I only have two and am in agony a lot of times. Honesty may be the best policy. By saying something like "I have been sufferering so badly for a long time because of the stigma involved in pain medications but it is becoming so bad that I find myself needing to find an appropriate medication so that I can get some of my life back"
You are so brave already dealing with pain without meds so this should be a walk in the park compared to that....you have the right to have your pain eased....I wish you success and hope that you get what you need. Hugs, Dee "
