Oxycontin and the lower dose

I have a question or I would like anyone's experience with this.....
Last month I was prescribed Oxycontin 40mg and Percocet for breakthrough pain. Well, the Oxycontin made me so damned sick that I wound up taking the pills back to the PM office, counting them out and flushing them. I will say that before I got so ill, I was amazed at how I felt absolutely no pain, I felt young again. Then, a few hours later I felt really nauseous and vomited several times. It made me feel weird. So, I was thinking no more of that. Well, I'm trying to get away from taking so much Percocet with the aceto, so, I asked the doc if I could try the low 20mg dose and he did. I haven't taken it yet, I was wondering if any of you could tell me if their is a vast difference in the two oxy's....I guess I'm wondering if it will make me as sick as the other one did. I do have Phenergan for nausea, so, I do intend to take it with this. Also, can anyone tell me how bad this stuff is on the system. I am very leary of this stuff, but, at the same time, I want to not have pain all the time. The Percocet works ok and does help, but, it just doesn't last long and the pain is back. Any advice or suggestions is appreciated! hurtn Posted on 07/01/09, 08:07 pm |

I can't get either right now from my PM so all I can tell you is when I did have the oxycontin I was taking 30mg a day and it worked for me for about 8-10 hours then I had some breakthru pain, not too bad. Apparently 30mg is WAY WAY WAY to much and they will never prescribe that much for me.. I didn't get sick on it at all. It would've been perfect for me to take for pain management but they refused to continue me on it. Is the phenergan helping with the nausea? I hope you can find the combo to help you.

Thank all of you for your feedback, it is much appreciated. You guys are really the greatest!
Kmiller....you got 30mg of Oxy? I only thought it came in 20, 40, 60 and up....does it come in 30? I really think I need mine to be upped...not to 40 mind you, but, perhaps the 30....we are still working on getting it right, and I am so thankful my doc is helping me with this. Don't know what i'll get now in place of my Percocets...suits me they are taking the aceto out. They've actually been talking about this aceto thing for over 10 years now, about how bad it is for your liver and all. I used to take it for headaches back then and completely quit it and started on Ibuprofen...next thing you know they will find something wrong with it. Anyway, why can't you get anything from your PM? I'm really sorry, I know you must be in pain, I am so sorry. I hope you find some relief soon. As for the Phenergan...I don't think it's that great, but, it seemed to help a bit with the nausea. I don't know what else is out there for that, that's all I've ver heard of. Best wishes to you. hurtn

Thanks slrow,
I do have an appointment next month with my doc and I think we will need to adjust my dosage of the OxyContin to higher. I already think I've gotten used to the 20 mg and I know that's not very high. I don't think I would have a problem taking the 40 again, or maybe take a 30 mg if they have that. I have found though, that it works best with the Percocet, that combination really seems to work well. He gives me 90 of those a month, but, I'm out of them by three weeks, and he has been kind enough to refill at that time, God bless him. The objective is to get rid of so much pain AND to get off so much of the aceto....so, we'll see. It's really tough when you run out of the Percos, even though I will wean myself off the week before, it is still rough when you run out, I can't believe how all the little spots in your body wake up and scream...."HELLO....I'M HERE AND I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU HURT REALLY BAD NOW!"....uGH! Thanks for your suggestion and comment! hurtn

hurt, you said: "At the time I took that Oxy, I was also having to take Pyridium and an sulfur antibiotic, could that have been some of the cause of the nausea?"
Pyridium makes me SO sick. Sicker than almost any medication I have ever taken. Within an hour or less of the dose, I am hanging over the toilet. I don't take it anymore, even with the worst UTI! I just wait for the antibiotics to work, and use my pain meds, with the OK of my doctor. Also, Sulfa can make you REALLY sick, as can the Urinary Tract Infection itself! No wonder you were so sick. You might want to talk to your doctor about OxyIR for the breakthrough pain. It is like Oxycontin, as it has NO Aceto or Ibuprofen (both of which can lead to nausea) but ONLY Oxycodone, but it is Immediate Release, meaning it works as fast as Percocet, but NO APAP. This, along with your Oxycontin may help. I hope you feel better.

What a helpful discussion!! My VA docs just belittle my comments/questions, and this has answered things they will NOT address.
A percocet without acetaminophen. (They told me there was not one). Sweating - I complained of profuse sweating to my pain doc, and he simply said it was not a pain issue - to go see my GP!! He could have simply said it was from the oxycodone!! I believe he withholds information on purpose. He's the "evil doc."

I have been on Oxycontin for about 15 years, and don't remember having any problems. I am on 40mg (20 in am and 20 in pm) . I can increase it up to 30 mg twice a day if needed. It really had been the only pain medication that has worked on my various problems (DDD, lupus, FMS, Breast cancer). So give it a chance, and perhaps you will find a dosage that will work for you. Good luck. Kathy
