Oxycontin and the lower dose

I have a question or I would like anyone's experience with this.....
Last month I was prescribed Oxycontin 40mg and Percocet for breakthrough pain. Well, the Oxycontin made me so damned sick that I wound up taking the pills back to the PM office, counting them out and flushing them. I will say that before I got so ill, I was amazed at how I felt absolutely no pain, I felt young again. Then, a few hours later I felt really nauseous and vomited several times. It made me feel weird. So, I was thinking no more of that. Well, I'm trying to get away from taking so much Percocet with the aceto, so, I asked the doc if I could try the low 20mg dose and he did. I haven't taken it yet, I was wondering if any of you could tell me if their is a vast difference in the two oxy's....I guess I'm wondering if it will make me as sick as the other one did. I do have Phenergan for nausea, so, I do intend to take it with this. Also, can anyone tell me how bad this stuff is on the system. I am very leary of this stuff, but, at the same time, I want to not have pain all the time. The Percocet works ok and does help, but, it just doesn't last long and the pain is back. Any advice or suggestions is appreciated! hurtn Posted on 07/01/09, 08:07 pm |

Percocet and OxyContin have the same thing in them - oxycodone. The only differences are that Percocet has acetaminophen in it and is a regular, immediate-release tablet while OxyContin is pure oxycodone in a sustained-release tablet. OxyContin is LESS likely to make you feel sick and is probably better for chronic pain as it releases a slow steady stream of oxycodone into your system. The problem with just taking Percocet is that you get a big spike of oxycodone all at once (and therefore more side effects) which then tails off (letting the pain back). The OxyContin shouldn't have made you any sicker than the Percocet if you were taking the same amount in mg per day.
Sorry if this sounds sort of lecture-y. I used to be a pharmacist. And I've been taking OxyContin for 4 years now and apart from making me sweat more, it has worked like a charm with very few side effects. I've read a lot of stuff about it OxyContin and it is just as safe long-term as any other narcotic so I have no qualms about taking it for the rest of my life. Hope this is helpful.

Honey, I agree with Friedalina, but if the medication makes you sick, it does and that is that. There is a Percocet out there that has no Acetaminophen on it and is all oxycodone, so you might want to ask your Doc for that. Also if the Phenergan does not work for your nausea, there are better medications out there for nausea.
Another thing that you could try is a Fentanyl patch. The patch lasts 72 hours and since is put in your body somewhere and doesn't go thru your stomach, this should not make you sick. Talk to your Doc about it and see what he says. Good luck to you.

Oh, thank you so much for your reply. Since you used to be a pharmacist, it really made me feel so much better. It was very informative. Yea, one thing I did notice was that it did make me sweat a lot.
At the time I took that Oxy, I was also having to take Pyridium and an sulfur antibiotic, could that have been some of the cause of the nausea? Thanks very much for your reply. hurtn

Friedalina, Thank you So much for explaining that so that us "average" people can understand it. I do have a question for you about the FDA pulling Percocet & Vicodin... What does that do for us, Chronic Pain patients? Is there something else coming out to replace it?

I'm in Canada - and here as far as I know nothing is being discontinued. From what I've read on the site here it seems like in the US they are just gettting rid of products that contain acetaminophen as well as a narcotic. You should be able to get pure oxycodone tablets (here called Oxy-IR or Supuedol). You shouldn't feel much difference in your pain if you get switched to a product with the same amount in mg of oxycodone per tablet. You can always take Tylenol as well if you need it.
About Tipper's comment - I wonder if hurtn was switched to a much higher dose of oxycodone when she went from Percocet to OxyContin (dr goofed?). That would explain the nausea, feeling wierd, and total abscence of pain. Just a thought.

Friedalina,
The doc had me on Percocet 10/325 and I was having to take about 5 - 6 of those a day because of the way the meds would wear off so quickly. The first time he put me on the OxyContin it was 40mg because I guess he was trying to match what i was taking with the Percocet for relief???? I don't know, but, it was way too strong I think. Now, he's prescribed the 20mg OxyContin with the Percs for breakthrough. Today I have started the Oxy and I can honestly say it didn't make me sick, but, I did still have some pain, so, I've had to take a couple of Percs here and there. So far it has helped me to cut back on the Perc dosage I take a day, which is good. I hope it will stay that way for awhile. The thought of taking less to manage my pain appeals to me greatly! Thanks for your very informative help. I appreciate it greatly. hurtn

The last I heard, it was not a slam dunk that the acetaminophen products were coming off the market. Just something the FDA had on its mind. They attribute 52,000 deaths annually to acetaminophen overdose. This includes, suicides, drug addicts, and people who think all OTC drugs are safe to take all they want.
Seems to me more like another bureaucracy trying to justify their salary. The public would be better served by decreasing the amount of the recommended daily dose, and a big warning label. The drug addicts already know about Tylenol but in their present state, don't care.

I agree with you Friedelina, it was a Doctor goof. BTW for those of you on Percocet, there is a Percocet available in the market that does not contain Acetaminophen, plus you can also go to Oxy IR, is all Oxycodone and is available in the States.
Easy M, I agree with your comment also. I don't think that this policy is written on stone yet, and as you and me know; there is a lot of $$$$ and lobbying that goes on in Washington and that Johnson & Johnson is not going to pull their preciou$ tylenol out of the market. This is one of those that remains to be seen.....

I take 60 mg of oxy and percocet for breakthrough pain and I have never had ant trouble. Although i stated at 10 mg and slowly moved up which I am now at my maximum does of 120mg a day.
Can your doctor give you something else. I know my 40 and 20 mg tablets came in generic. Maybe that would help sometimes they are not as potent as the original. Best of luck to you I know it sucks being in pain all the time and not hving anything to help.
