Break thru pain

I just started my Oxycontin regimen today and I'm having alot of breakthru pain. I don't have much experience with this medication and I don't know what meds I can mix with it. I have some of my hydrocodones 7.5/500's left and was wondering if it's safe to take one or two a few hours after I've taken the Oxy for breakthru pain? I can't call my doctor as it's a saturday so I'm wondering if any of you know if it's safe or not. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

" Call your pharmacist. They will know better than your doc. I don't have any experience with that and I'm sorry I can't help. But definitely try your pharmacist. "

" yes it's fine to take hydro's for BT thru pain. I take percs, the highest dosage there is fort BT pain. You do need to contact your doc on Monday to let him know that you are having so much BT pain, so that he can RX a BT med for you or up your OXY.

" I took 2 vicodin and that didn;t even work.. I had some percocets after my steroid injection and that worked better for me in the past. Maybe they will be better for breakthru pain. I'll ask him. Meanwhile I'm gonna try and ice.. Maybe this time it will work. Thanks for your help : )

" Unfortunately the injection doc only gives 15 pills and they were used up last weekend to recover from the injection. They seem to work so much better. I think they may be a winner for the BT pain. we'll see what the doctor says. I haven't even heard if my PCP is willing to take over the treatment plan or not. I'm not sure if her office takes on CP patient's or not. Most PCP offices around Seattle don't take on CP patient's, nor do the PM doctors rarely take on treatment plans, but rather they make recommendations to the PCP offices that don't take on CP patient's. Nice huh? It's tough over here.. Alot of paranoid doctors.

" Best bet is calling your pharmacist. Most PCP's do not know enough about CP, at least that has been my experience in life.... I hope that you can find a good pain management Doc. "

" I am not having much luck with the OxyContin myself. I do take Percocet 10/325 for BT but it's not even really doing much anymore. It's been a really, really discouraging week as I've been having really awful leg aches as well as body aches (different from the ones we suspect are fibro). I thought that I was over the methadone withdrawls but we just aren't sure, as I cannot sleep at ALL. Last night I was up from 3am until almost 7am, crying, hurting, trying to sleep with no luck. I finally took a really hot shower around 6 and slept from about 7 - 10:30ish. Bless my husband, he went to work after all of that. Has anyone had leg pains from Oxy? I am at my wits end, I feel like I've taken an enormous step backwards. My mom flew in from Little Rock yesterday evening and I swear I feel like I've been crying the whole time. Though, part of that is because we have not seen each other since my sister's funeral. "

" Hi Valerie- I'm so sorry your so misersable.. What a nightmare for you to go thru. I'm not having any leg pains from the Oxy.. but the right side of my face keeps going numb since I started the Oxy. Plus I'm finding I need to be taking 3 at a time instead of 1-2. Its barely even taking the edge off. My appt is next monday with the PM doc so I plan to let him know. I'm wondering if I should even tell him about the facial numbness. You should definately call your PM doctor about the Oxy not being effective and your withdrawals. He should've weaned you off the methadone not stopped you abruptly. having to go thru withdrawals and deal with CP is terrible.. I'm so sorry Valerie.
~gentle but big hugs for you!! "

" Hi, I was just reading through your post and the responses, please correct me if I am wrong but did you say that you are taking up to 3 oxycontin at a time? If this is the case then you are NOT taking this medication properly as it is a timed released medication and you stand a very good chance of overdosing on it:( Doctors often give percocet 5 or 10 mg or vicodin 5 or 7.5 for breakthrough for patients that are taking oxycontin. I'm hoping that you have enough of the oxy to make to your next appointment because stopping this medication abruptly causes the body to go into narcotic withdrawal. When you see your doctor next, tell him/her that you were not getting adequate relief at all from the oxycontin and yes, I would mention the facial numbness as well. I'm not sure that I'd be so forthcoming about taking over the prescribed amount though, they may frown upon this:( As you said, there are a lot of paranoid doctors. xoxoLyn "
