3 questions about medication for pain

I am currenttly on methadone for chronic lower back pain and fibromyalgia. I am starting to grow tolerant to it and it might be time for a change. Does anybody know if oxycodone will work better? Also if you switch to oxycodone, will you feel withdrawal effects from going off of methadone? One more question, is oxycodone the right medication or is it oxycontin. I don't know which is stronger. Thank you!!! Kitties2

" I'm pretty sure Oxycontin is the stronger one because I am on Oxycodone now and it is barely stronger than lortab. I can't offer any other than info than that though. "

" I'm just on Lortab 7.5/500 or vicodin. I've never tried oxycotin or methadone. Unfortunately I think you will have some withdrawals. Can you slowly wean yourself off the methadone? Or does your doc want you to stop methadone immediately then start the oxy? Good luck ~hugs "

" Oxycotin is stronger. I took oxycodone and became tolerate to it very easy. Now I am on oxycotin and evn though it helps with the pain it doesn't take it all the way away.
Oxycodone does not have withdrawl symptoms but you will have it from oxycotin. I know if I am late taking it I start feeling clammy and chills. So when you come off of it you have to be weaned. "

" OxyCONTIN is the same EXACT drug as OxyCODONE. OxyCONTIN is simply a TIME RELEASE version of the opiate known as "oxycodone." One is NOT "stronger" than an other, as they are identical. Only the word "contin" means "time release." You can take Oxycontin every 12 or every 8 hours, depending on your pain. It may take about an hour for the first coating to be digested and the medication to start working, it is supposed to keep releasing for about 12 hours.

Oxy IR (or Immediate Release) or Percocet (which is Oxycodone with Acetaminophen) works within about 20 minutes of taking, and lasts between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the person. You usually take OxyIR or Percocet "PRN" or as needed. Oxycontin is ONLY for long term chronic pain use.

As for "stronger than hydrocodone" this is really different among people. I find hydro and oxy about the same "strength" milligram per milligram, but at first my doctor thought the Oxy was "twice as strong" Only after I spoke to the nurse, and saw him about being under medicated (as he put me on HALF the amount of Oxy when I switched) did he understand and raise the dosage. But, everyone's body is different, and how you respond to each medication is different.

Most people do have a small amount of "withdrawal" as their bodies change from one drug to an other, even within the same drug family. Some people can just change and have NO issues, while others go through withdrawal, and NEED to switch the drugs SLOWLY so they are not sick and in more pain. "

" oxycontin is stronger, than oxycodone which is percoset. if you are doing well with the methadone you might want to try oxycontion or even roxycontin and yes you should decrease the dose over a period of time. Hope you find something else that will work better for you. "

" Oxycontin and oxycodone are the exact same med. The only difference is oxycontin is time relased - it releases slowly over a 12 hour period (which is why its only taken twice a day) and oxycodone is immediately released and only lasts 4 to 6 hours. Those in chronic pain are generally put on oxycontin and also given oxycodone for break through pain as needed. "

" I was on methadone for three weeks and it made me too sick (nausea) so Monday my pm started me on OxyContin 30mg x2 day. He did not seem to think I'd have any withdrawl symptoms and that it would be fine to just go from one to another.

I was NOT fine, still not. Please read my blog from Monday, written by my husband, for a glimpse of what we are going through.

I am still feeling too bad to write much but I could not just pass this up without adding my experience. Good luck to you.

PS cant tell if the Oxy is working as I have been so sick, "
