How to function on pain meds at work

My doctor recently increased my pain meds to Percocet. It is helping my pain and I am grateful for that. However, I am not able to function on it. I am drowsy, can't focus, light headed, have blurry vision, and just can't keep my eyes open. I have been going to work and drawing the attention of others around me. I work on the phone all day and have found myself falling asleep while talking to people. I woke up to one lady on the phone saying "I think she's snoring." Another time, I dropped my pen and that woke me up. But mostly I can't read my computer screen and people have to tell me three times why they called. How do you all function on these pain meds?

Everyone reacts to pain meds differently. I think if you advised your Dr. about your not being able to function he might either adjust the dose or try a different drug. I pretty much live on my own most of the time and I can't be zoned out as I have to be able to take care of myself and remain functional. What you might try is just taking enough of the drug to take the edge off the pain but not so much that it makes you unable to do that which you need to do. There has to be a happy medium in there somewhere I would think.

I was really drowsy when I first started taking the stronger meds. Nauseous, too (I lost 15 lbs). It does get better after a while. In the meantime, do you drink coffee or some other caffeinated beverage. Caffeine is a pretty safe drug, and has worked well for me (check with your Dr. first - mine said it was OK)

I was in a call center before I went out and had to go on disability. The same thing kept happening to me. Constant caffeine to try and combat it, still didnt work and that was only on hydros. Hate to see what it would be like now on more meds. I just couldnt handle it. Being on phones you are strapped to the desk, cant get up and move much or go get some air. I hope they can find some med combo without that effect or the symptoms change for you. Hugs and best wishes!

I had the same problem, some days I was fine but since I dont sleep well because of the pain, if I sat still too long I would start to fall asleep. I got called into the office mgr twice because of it, I was honest with her, everyone knew I had pain issues because it was very obvious. I had to quit working and go on disability approx 6 months later, in fact on the paperwork my Dr filled out for the hearing, he stated my meds were sedating and it would keep me from being able to work ( among other things) If you keep working, maybe you could either cut back on them during the day or take a different pain med at work that doesnt make you so tired and take the Percocet when you're not at work. I hope everything works out for you- Bonnie

How long have you been on the percocet? I think eventually you will build a tolerance to it- meaning you won't be so drowsy all the time. I used to be that way with my vicodin but now I can function on it. I do occasionally get a quesy tummy but I will just eat some crackers or a bowl of cereal and that usually helps. Try taking some vitamin C when you first wake up in the morning. Or try one of those vitamin waters, the revive flavor works really well. Hope it works out for you! ~hugs : )

you probably have a low tolerance to pain meds. I have a very high so i do not get drowsy even with my demeral. Tald to your dr. he can give you a lower dose or try you on something else. You might also get use to it you said you have recently been started on it, maybe you should give it a couple of weeks. are you eating when you take your meds? that might help some too. good luck i hope you find that right dose.

Like you pain meds make me too tired to work so I have come to the realization that I cannot take them while working and just have to deal with the pain. It is unfortunate and there are days I want to cry but I have to work so I have no choice.
My doctor gave me tramadol to take during work but even it makes me feel goofy..... Hope you find something that works for you.

Try cutting your pill in half and taking only that. I do this with my percocet & it takes the edge off but I can still function very well.
