The St. Jude Medical center has a bunch of info on SCS, the different systems, and all the side effects of the trial. They're worried about infection mainly and having the correct staff there and a clean OR is important for it to be implanted.
Here's the website: http://www.sjm.com/procedures/proc...(SCS)

Yes, an SCS has to be installed in a hospital because it is major surgery. In order to install the paddle leads the NS needs to do a Laminectomy, this is not elective surgery. So you need to be in a hospital with full hospital staff, anesthesiologist, etc..... When I had mine installed I spend 2 nights in the hospital.
There could be complications, etc. that is why it can be done at a PM clinic or as an outpatient.

i just got my implant on the 16th it is a stjude ANS I already had a lamenectomy from a previous surgery but my dr. said he would not go through the lamenectomy cause the leads are in the middle spine he put them in the epideral space and the monitor in my right upper butocks I am still pretty sore. You will have strict restrictions such as no lifting, bending, reaching out and reaching over your head. they put you in the hospital cause it is sterile OR and it is major surgery I did not have to stay overnight i went home about an hour after they woke me up. My question to you is why have the breat implants so soon after this, that may not be a good idea. depending on the unit you get you also have other limitations some cant have ultrsounds anymore no one can do MRI;s anymore, my rep told me i can not do MRI but could do CT and ultrsound. You need to find out exactly what our limitations will be, if you have any complications with your breat surgery they will need to know what you can and can't have. You may want to completely heal up good before doing another surgery ecspecially a cosmetic one.
