Oxycodone is not really taking the edge off my pain as it use too and was wondering if Demerol would be better at numbing the pain. Any thoughts on this? Is it in pill form or shots? Has anyone else on board used or uses this and can give me some more info.

Thanks for your help.

" What strength oxycodone are you taking? There are different strengths 10, 20, evem 30. As for the demerol, they general give this IV as a post operative medication or for severe pain as it is a very strong pain medication. Using this now leaves you little to move towards in the future and if you are a chronic pain patient they try to increase you minimally (as most of us know). I takr dilaudid for break through but it doesn't work as well orally as it does IV. When I am having a lupus flare in addition to the back issues I have gone to the ER to get a shot of dilaudid to try to get the pain under control thengo back to my regulat meds. I hope this was helpful. xoxoLyn "

" Definitley try asking you doctor to up the strentgh of the oxy, I would recommend oxycontin, this is a long acting form of oxycodone, it lasts for telvce hours, I use dilaudid 4mg pills for break thru pain management, as well. Demerol is usually given exactly described by Lynr IV injection, I do not know of demerol in pill form, but the equivilant if not better is dilaudid, which sustains the pain quite quickly. I suffer from Chronic Pancreatitis pain, everyday and the oxycontin I take is th ER Extended Release form, at 30 mg every twelve hours, I sometimes will take 60 and 60 to total 120 in a 24 hr period this is plenty of pain meds for my serious pain factor. Just a quick note xycodone is fast acting and last for about four hours or so, oxycontin is deayed anda little is released over a twelve hour period. Hope this helps, Regards, Customs 572. Oh and for the record I also take cymbalta for pain management too, it really helps. "

" Actually Demerol is available in pill form, 50's and 100's. It's also available in a capsule mix with phenergan(for nausea) and I think it's called Meperigan. I used to get it for kidney stones. A lot of hospitals aren't using it as much anymore as it can cause seizures in higher doses so they now lean more toward using the morphines, dilaudid's and fentenyl for injections.

I got a lot of relief from IV Demerol, but not so much with pills. Maybe ask for a higher dose of oxy, I think they go up as high as 30mg.
