I was diagnosed 3/09 and have been on Gleevec ever since. I have experienced many of the "expected" side effects but I have something new and I am wondering if anyone else has this problem. My elbows, wrists and knees are very achy, much what I imagine arthritis feels like. Has anyone else experienced this and have you found an easy method to combat the discomfort? Also, when does the tiredness seem to go away. I do really well most days but at least once a week, I feel like I am going to collapse from exhaustion. Many thanks.

Hi -
I was diagnosed 8/2008. Had severe joint and muscle pain for several months. I've seen posted on other sites as a common side effect of gleevec. I took Vicoden and Ibyprofin for several months and then, when I could started exercising, most of the pain went away, and I no longer need pain meds. Drinking lots of water helped too. I've heard that many people experience the fatigue, and I've talked with a man from the initial Gleevec trials who says he feels great and fatigue isn't an issue. He told me that it gets better every year, which I have found to be true now that I'm at the 1 year mark. I feel a lot stronger and better than I did at the 8 month mark. It's actually amazing to me every time I turn one of those corners where I feel like things are never going to change and then all of a sudden they do. I would absolutely let yourself rest on the one day a week you feel exhausted. You must need the rest. CML has taught me to really listen to what my body needs and not try to push through. If you haven't looked at the Sprycel conversation, there's a good link (provided by Bob) to another site with a lot of good information and well-informed CMLers. Take good care!
