It's actually not a painful procedure, more or a pressure feeling. It sound a lot worse than it is. I only felt one pain when I had it done in April of 09. I did have the doctor give me something to calm my nerves but it wasn't bad. You will be sore in that area for 2 or 3 days.
It helps to have a loved one by your side to comfort you just in case.

My first bone marrow test was without anything to help the pain and I found it extremely painful. They gave me a Valuim IV the second time and while it still hurt, it was manageable and I'm not dreading the next one. Everyone is different. My husband was with me both tiimes.
Good luck.

The procedure itself was not painful but I did feel very sore for a day or so. Best of luck!

When I had this done, it was probably the most painful thing I've experienced in my life. They were kind enough to put me under for the second attempt - it's just something some people can handle and others can not. I for one could not and am not looking forward to future biopsies.

Mine was performed in April and I only had a local. It was by far the most painful thing I have ever done thus far. I have since found out that there are additional options for pain relief and would definately require that the next time around. Ask your Hem/Onc for more than just a local.

The pain seems to vary greatly from person to person and depending on the skill of the person doing the biopsy. Mine have always been under a local and most times I've also taken Ativan (a tranquillizer, but it also interferes some with short term memory retention). Mine have never been very painful, also I am sore for a couple of days after.

My first aspiration sucked for me and everyone in the room. I only had local and I am not one to complain about pain but WOW!!! I was screaming like a crazy woman and shaking after from the pain. The aspiration is the worst. I had a spasm during it that shot down my leg. It was very very very bad for me. My doctor said I didn't need anything else because he was fast. I don't care that it only took 10 minutes those were the worst ten minutes of my life! I have had two kids also doesn't compare. Sore for two or three days sitting on the toilet and sit at all. I refuse to have another without something extra.
