My Dad was recently diagnosed with CLL and I am so confused... I keep hearing that this is the good kind of leukemia to have and that you don't die from it... But, that just doesn't seem true to me. Does anyone have any info on good resources AND no where the best doctors are?? I'm guessing Mayo?? Thx

I'm sorry to hear about your dad and no it isn't the "Good Cancer"!There are no good cancers and plenty of people die from it.There are lots of good CLL Doctors.I go to MD Anderson in Houston.Where does your dad live?

I, too, agree there is no real "good" cancer, but this CLL is certwinly one of the most treatable ones. I was dx 2 yrs ago and still do not require treatment and may never. so, with that being said, your Dad has a better chance of living a long and relatively productive life with this disease compared to many others conditions that he could have come up with. I see my Onocologist every 3 mos, have blood drawn and that is about it. the important thing is he needs to go monitor his progress with a good Dr and educate himself.

Hi Duncaloo
Good to see you here at Daily Strength talking to poeple and asking good questions! There are quite a few web sites with good information and people with a lot of expertise you can talk to. Try http://www.cllforum.com/ and http://clltopics.org/ Here where I live in Australia there are Foundations like Leukemia Foundation and Cancer Council where you can simply ring up/front up and talk to someone, you could check that out where you live too? I was DX diagnosed last July and have not needed any treatment so far and life is good. best wishes Gary

Hello....I guess I am also in the same situation as duncaloo, my husband was diagnosed recently. He does not want to tell anyone, neither allowed me to go to the doctor with him. I have no one to ask questions , talk about, or share experiences with. He was also told he had the "good cancer" and he was told to be on "stage 0" and to "watch and wait".

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis.
To echo what everyone else has said, there is no good cancer. Having said that, CLL is very treatable although it is incurable at the present time. I was diagnosed in June of 2008 and my CLL went from indolent to aggressive in the course of 2 months. My bone marrow biopsy showed 90% packed with CLL. I started treatment with FCR in October of 2008 and just got finished with my final course in March of 2009. I am stilll waiting to see what my final Flow Cytometry will reveal, but all the lymph nodes are gone and my CBC is completely normal. I have to say I was scared when I first found out, but I also have a wonderful Oncologist who is not only an expert in his field but is one of the most compassionate persons you would ever want to meet. Good treatment and a good, caring Dr. go a long way in helping us through this battle. Good luck and God Bless.
