We did this to ourselves? Dr Oz

I watched the Dr. Oz show today - Friday. He did a segment on Exhaustion, not CFS. Dr. Teitelbaum was his guest. He fashioned the presentation to suggest we did this to ourselves because we abused ourselves with poor diets, bad habits and exhaustion.
The next segment was about a woman who drank, smoked and had a poor diet. He forecast all kinds of gloom an doom for her. Did anyone else watch it? Posted on 10/24/09, 01:10 am |

OK I'm in a mean mood tonight everyone who's said we did this to ourselves or have told us it's all in our heads along with the people from CDC who have hinder research in this area, when they finally have a test for this XMRV, I hope they test positive and have to wonder if they are ticking time bombs for these illnesses. I'm not really this mean but sometimes it feels good.

Yup, I did. When he said the words Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and how many people probably had it and it went misdiagnosed, I thought we might be going somewhere here! I saw and heard Dr. Teitelbaum, but he didn't get a chance to say much.
You are right....Dr. Oz did not paint the true picture. Many, many people will just turn their complaints about "fatigue" to the word "exhaustion" now....with no change in how the medical world needs to veiw this illness! The only lemonade I can make outta this lemon, was that the words Chronic Fatigue Syndrome finally got plastered all over the TV and all over the Country...and people who say this thing does not exist, will have to think twice before they say it again. A zillion people saw that show! Let's just hope and pray that somebody saw it that has some power to validate us in a new and powerful way!!! We all know we didn't do this to ourselves. I wish it hadn't come across that way...maybe it didn't.....maybe we're just too sensitive about how we're perceived after so many years of dealing with ignorance...

I didn't see it. Did Teitelbaum blame CFS on poor diet and habits or did Dr. Oz?

Sounds like yet another reason not to turn the tv on until evening news time, lol.

agree unduki. very disapointing. cheerful drs. with their expensive books. very superficial. no new understanding and no empathy either. so a waste of time. should have panel of people, drs of infectious diseases, rheums, sleep specialists, psychologists since we're all depressed, and phys.therapy and pain drs. all of them with a mediator who has fibro and suffers like we do.

zRobinx...it was Dr. Oz that painted everything as exhaustion. Dr. T. was not given an opportunity to go into any detail.
Even if one doesn't agree with Dr. T. or his protocol...it was still good that a specialist was involved and connected to the CFS diagnosis...IMHO~ xoxo

I just saw a short interview with the author of the following:
Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America by Barbara Ehrenreich Yipee!! She was talking about having breast cancer and when she did research for finding help and support all she found was the advice to "think positive". She said it didn't help and there needs to be something more than having a positive attitude when it comes to dealing with illness. I LOVED THIS WOMAN. I haven't read the book but I will check with my library for a copy. I read too much to buy books. She didn't say that having a positive attitude was a bad thing, of course not. She said there needs to be an alternative to the belief that you can think your way out of cancer. We so desperately need this voice! She was making fun of how those who promote "the secret" (a bestselling book and philosophy) have used quantum physics to sell their idea that thinking positively about something will attract money and success. I bring this up because Oprah (do not watch her show, or daytime TV) got Dr. Oz started into fame, didn't she? And, Oprah is a big fan of "the secret" and calling on the universe to give you whatever you want in life. At least I get that impression from what I've read... Anyhoo... there is a voice of reason in this world. carry on. katy

Oz didn't even let Teitelbaum talk. Dr. T got out half a sentence. It truly is the Dr. Oz show.
Strangely enough, Dr. Oz didn't post a the video of the segment. I'd encourage everyone to send him a note letting him know he's off base. http://www.doctoroz.com/

Dr. Oz is usually pretty good. I remember his show on Oprah where he brought damaged organs and tissue from autopsies of people who had suffered from high blood pressure and compared it with healthy tissue. It was quite fascinating as my aunt had justs suffered from an aortic anyeurism. I thought that was a very effective way to teach people why controlling high blood pressure is important.
I suspect, like most doctors, he might be very good in some areas of interest (and education) and remiss in others. He's a cardiothoracic surgeon so I don't expect him to know much about CFS. It seems like the producers got confused and made a show about exhaustion and promoted it as being about CFS? I would blame them and Teitalbaum for not making more of a distinction (though I didn't see the show.) The frustrating thing is that a lot of people watch his show. Someone called my mom and asked her about what I'm eating! Gah. kjfe, I love Barbara Ehrenreich!
