I am facing a chemo regime that means I will lose my hair. Last time I went through this I managed to hang on to it..this time I won't be able to and would appreciate any advice on where/how to find a decent wig.
I would like to think that I could find a wig that will look like the real thing, or better, and won't take too much trouble to look after. Am I being naive? What are your experiences with wigs or do you think I should forget the idea and be bald??? Posted on 11/06/07, 01:11 pm |

I was given a free wig on the nhs - by a very helpful & sympathetic 'wig lady'. When it came to it tho' i found i preferred to wear hats (& still do) as the wig has never really felt like 'me'. I guess you have to experiment and do whatever makes you most comfortable; its a weird time tho.

I've been wearing bandannas mostly during my hair loss. I did get a wig from the American cancer society that I wore about 3 times. I have it on in my picture here. I would be happy to mail it to you if you want it. I have a couple of liners to wear underneath too. Send me a message if you're interested.

I have a wig, but I don't wear it very often. I went our and got all kinds of hats to wear.
I felt more like me with the hats than I do the wig. Plus I can match them to my outfits. I miss my eyelashes more than my hair. I know that probably sounds weird, but that's me.

Cath missing your eyelashes doesn't sound weird to me. I miss them too but I really miss my eyebrows the most. I try to draw them on and I never get them even. Somdays I even looked surprised. haha

I went to a salon that specalized in wigs & found a great one. I went synthetic because it is easier to style & care for, plus much less expensive the brand I went with is Norke in fact I have ordered another style. I get so many complements. I went with what my hair color was, just I little straighter style since I always had curly hair & it was hard to wear it straight. People who haven't seen me in a while assume I just grew my hair out. I wear a cotton cap under it. It is very comfortable I have had it since June. Around home I usually don't wear it & sometimes if I am just running a quick errand I throw on a hat. But I am so glad I got one. I really love it & it is so easy. Getting ready in the morning is a snap & no more bad hair days!
Good Luck Deb

I've started the chemo just over a week ago.. so am now waiting for my hair to fall out.. I have wig, which looks better than my own hair. I know I will get used to it.. because I will have to and hopefully it will be fun.. There are so many good styles to choose from. I think I will shave my hair off when it begins to come out.. thank you for your advice... xxxxxx

I am glad you decided to shave your hair, I know for me it was much easier. I just ordered wig #2 should be here any day & I can't wait. Enjoy.

Yesterday I noticed it had begun to come out slightly.. I sort of panicked and my daughter came over with her clippers.. Only it didn't feel right.. she was in a hurry and it all felt a bit grim... So decided I will a couple of friends over on 1st Jan, tomorrow, and make some fun of it... a New Head for the New Year.. I don't know that my friends will see it as a fun thing to go to though... But I need some moral support with this one.. I know I will be fine once it has gone it's the waiting for it to happen that feels creepy to me.. Just want to move on from here and the New Year seems like a good time for moving on... Thank you all and have a great year..xxxxxx

I tried to have my sister do it the first time she got one razor sweep & bursted into tears. So I think it's best not to have family around. I like your idea of having friends is great. I had my hair stylist do it. Best to you in 2008.

Well.. yesterday I shaved what was left of my hair off.. Just me and one brave friend in the end.. it was difficult to arrange a party as decided at the last minute.. but it was great fun.. seriously.. we had a great laugh and videoed the escapade.. I have to edit it as it took rather longer to do than I thought and I will post it when it's done.. I learnt a lot about myself and my preconceptions about no hair.. It actually suits me very short.. Like everything else in life.. it wasn't as sad or scary as I imagined it would be.. Just have to get used to the new routine now.. and figure out what to do when I'm not wearing the wig.. I've yet to find a hat that suits me.. It's a new experience and interesting for that.. liberating... thanks for the advice and support.. lots of love xxxxxx
