Social life with CMT

Aside from the difficulties with the disease itself, i have difficulty with not having the ability to drink alcohol. Doctors told me that alcohol will cause further damage and i should not consume more then 2 glasses of wine a week. Since my diagnosis, i have stayed away from bars/social gatherings due to the encouragement i get from friends to drink with them. My social life has diminished due to CMT Disease and i have been stuck at home for too long feeling alone and cast out. I dont see the point of going out and being the sober "Debbie Downer," sitting in the corner, feeling sorry for myself. Anyone have a similar experience with their social life?

Arid, obviously there isn't a lot of people in this group, and I'm not even sure I have CMT. however I do take lots of meds and had to give up drinking alcohol all together, I also had to quit smoking and had to give up many other things in my life. To be honest with you there is more to life than drinking alcohol. You need to change friends if that's all they think about is going out to bars and drinking to have a good time. Maybe you just need to educate them on your disease so they will understand. To meet new friends join an exercise group such as water exercises, take some college classes, volunteer somewhere or even join a church. Lots of different ways to socialize and meet people. Its to bad your feeling this way. I have the genes for CMT, and also have had multiple Pulmonary Embolisms and lots of my friends treated me like I had the plague until they realized I'm still me and just plain fun to be around without drinking and partying. I still go do things with my friends after I educated them on what my health problems were, now they have a tendency to watch out for me when i sometimes attempt to slip up.

Well do they have any idea about this desease?? And if they do and still try to get you to drink then young man they are not your friends sounds to me that you need to re-evaluate who is truly your friends and then if they turn out to be what it sounds .
get new friends ones that will help you if you need that is the definition of a friend in my book trust me they are hard to find thesse days. but it is worth the search.

Here's a "dumb" question: it is my understanding, via CMT research, that alcohol was taken off the toxic list. What am I missing?
Thanks!

I dont believe for a minute that alcohol can effect cmt. the malyn around the nerves cant possably be getting broken down by drinking. if that was the case wouldent we have more people with cmt.

I talked with our Dr., who specializes in molecular cell biology, about this. He believes that a glass or 2 of wine per night won't exacerbate the neuropathy, but heavy drinking alone can cause the neuropathy, whether or not CMT is present.
