We are at the point where doctors don't really seem to be sure what this is. we've done allthe tests- spinal taps, EMG,nerve conductions, kat scans, every blood test in the world. They want to do a biopsy they sy this is the only 100% way to tell us if this is what my 17 yr old son has. Has anyone been through this step in the process? He is having it on Tuesday 11/17/09. I hope to talk with someone who has been through this and did te doctors tell you the same thing.

No I have not had one nor have I heard of one . I would be interested in knowing about it . and have you gotten a second opinion they found out about my CMT by hooking a bunch of wires and shocking me several times and if the biopsy is worse than that I sure would get a second opinion before I put him through it.

I went through similar testing in Houston with Dr. Harati, who is well known in neuropathy. This was in 1999, but they too told me the biopsy was the only way to tell. They take out a piece of a large nerve in the side of the foot, which will leave numbness below it, but it doesn't control any movement. It is apparently an easy outpatient procedure, although I elected not to have it done.

yes please do the biopsy. it is the only way to find out for sure what your son has. i had one when i was 5 years old and i found out i had familial spastic parapaersis/ heredity spastic parapalegia. it takes a little while to get the results back and it feels like a short waiting game. But the docotrs will find out what your son has. stay strong
