New Member Send a PM Give a Hug hi , i am asking for some opinions for my wife who has cervical cancer. we found out 2 weeks ago and all we have to do is make our choice. with out going into all the details i could tell you we are at the point of deciding.. some info....all 3 sources say curable,100%... all tests show no spreading of 3 mm area at front of cervex...all test are done, exams p e t scan m r i .... our options are surgery for radical hyst...OR....radiation and chemo...... its our choice, they say both ways are going to be just as effective....so my wife seems to already choose rad. and chemo...i just don;t want her jumping to fast on one choice or the other... but it does seem the EASIER way with rad and chemo when they tell you no hair lose, very little problems........... but with surgery,it looks more painfull,3 days in hospital and many weeks of recovery... my wife is a strong 58 year old... NO ONE WOULD PICK THE SURGERY,IT SOUNDS MUCH HARDER,ALL END RESULTS BEING THE SAME.... I WAS ACTIVE ON THE INGUINAL HERNIA SUPPORT GROUP ,I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE HERE A YEAR LATER... IF THERE ARE SOME OPINIONS I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THEM ,,,THANK YOU....THE HOSPITALS WERE SOME OF THE BEST WHERE I LIVE IN NYC...SLOAN-KETTERING, NORTH-SHORE.LIJ, AND MANHASSETT LIJ.....PHIL Posted on 09/02/09, 01:09 pm |

You don't mention the staging of your wife's cancer. Mine was Stage 1B. I was offered the choice of radical hysterectomy or radiation (without chemo) in 1986. I chose the radical hysterectomy. Out of the 21 lymph nodes sampled at surgery, one was positive. One month later, because of the positive node, I started external radiation treatments, a total of 30, given five days a week for six weeks. I was 48 years old at the time. Why not ask the doctors which treatment they would choose for their wives or family members? A hard choice to make, I know. I wish her and you all the best.

stage 1 b......same here. and i did ask him if it was his family member.. at SLONE-KETTERING he said he would do all 3 options....with the radiation and chemo, that would cover everything all 3 said because that is what they would do if just with the surgery if they found something in the lymph nodes. so it looks like rad and chemo would cover everything...

you see ,thats what i am getting at.. with this stage 1b. the better end result answer keeps endind up with rad and chemo..i asked (isn.t it less likly to come back if everything is removed,,,, he said not really, there could still be a reoccurance in other areas in the PELVIC reagion....soooo, to us,it seems the better way would be to just cut to the chase(as the say) and do the rad and chemo as the also said probably no hair loss or other hard effects because of the early staging.......

all 3 docs said either way,,,our option...it just seems like so much more with a rad hysterectomy...the days in the hospital 4-6 weeks recovery and so forth...it seems to be the way my wife wants is the chemo and rad....

My complete story 23 years out from original diagnosis and treatment is that I developed lymphedema of both legs. I also had a recurrence almost six years later, a distant spread, with a year of chemotherapy.(Remember, I had one positive lymph node).
However, I am a survivor and consider myself fortunate. I wish the same for your wife. She is lucky indeed to have you in her corner, so interested and involved.

I wish you and your wife all the best whatever the decision. I did not have a choice, mine was aggressive and hyster. was really the only option and then as it turned out lymph nodes were neg so I did not have to have rad. or chemo thankfully.
I have a friend who had breast cancer. they did not have to do a masect. just removed the tumor and then she had raditaion and gaiven the choice for chemo or not. It sounds like a similiar situation. in that the odds for her were that it would be cured with the raditation alone, chemo was the added insurance I guess. She chose not to have chemo and she is still without cancer. It is awesome to make an informed decision. my prayers are with your family. Your wife sounds like she has great love and support around her and that makes such a difference.
