So my ob/gyn called me the other day and told me that my pap smear came back abnormal.....

I have to go for a coloscopy on the 17th

They tried to tell me that most abnormal pap smears arent cancer "yadda yadda yadda" but that doesn't keep me from being terrified....

" I just took a sleeping pill, Sarah so I can't anwswer this question in detail but wanted to tell you that I and many of my girlfriends have been through this. Not one of us had cancer. I had cryosurgery (where they freeze the cervix) but it was painless and just precautionary. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

HUGS.
Joanne "

" Statistically, yes, most abnormal paps are not cancer.

That being said, yes, it can be cancer. I am one of those people.

That being said, the unknowing is very terrifying. I am glad you are reaching out and expressing your feelings. they are very valid.

I had never had an abnormal pap. And I got scared etc. and it was valid. What helped me until I had my appt to find out more was to give it away. Whether it be God, the wind, or a higher spirtual being of any kind. It doesn't matter. At this point in time, I asked myself. Right now, is there anything I can do to change anything. I answered "no." Will excessive worry change anything? the answer was no. in fact in myexperience excessive worry only made me more miserable. and I end up not enjoying the good things I had going on around me.

This is getting long so I will stop.

my prayers are with you. The unknown is always the hardest for me. Things like writing down questions for the doctor etc. are helpful and proactive ways to help yourself and stress and feel a some semblence of control.

It is very good to take someone with you to doctor appt.
Anyway, you can read my story. it was cancer and today I am now over a year cancer free. I didn't have chemo or radiation. And so, cancer or not, there is life and hope.

Keep reaching out. it does help. even just to say, "hey, I am scared." and we here can say. yes, and you are not alone."

I hope you find peace. "

" I got diagnosed with Hpv that causes cervical cancer 2 years ago until this month I had abnormal paps . I had to have biopsy's and cyrosurgery like joanne explained but Im finally having normal paps so Im hoping it never comes back it is just very important that you get your paps every 6 months till you have a normal one and after that every year. It will be ok "

" Good Luck! I went through a colpo in May, and then had a LEEP in June. I know how scary this is, but the good news is you are getting this taken care of very early. I had severe dysplasia (non-cancerous, but advanced abnormal) and the LEEP took care of this. Now, I feel a lot better. :)

Nonetheless, it's hard not to think the worst - we've all done it - so be sure to come by here when you need an ear. :) "

" My gyno was able to tell me right away what she believed my result would be, but it does take a few weeks to get the lab diagnoses back. My gyno was pretty much correct, but it was still nerve wracking waiting for the result. "
